Taye Diggs Says Wife Idina Was A "Warrior" During Natural Childbirth

"Warrior" seems like a fitting description for a woman who gives birth with nothing for pain! Taye Diggs described the day his son was born while visiting the 'Ellen DeGeneres Show' (it'll air today).

"There was something going on that morning, so we knew this is going to be a special day," he says in an interview on the Ellen DeGeneres Show (airing Thursday). "She said, 'Go off to work, and if I need you, I will call you.'" So I went off to work. I got that call.

"In the movies and on TV, you always hear everyone's rushing, but everyone is telling me when it actually happens, there is no need to rush. There is no need to speed," Diggs, 38, continues. "So on the way home, I was constantly telling myself, 'Relax, relax, be cool.'"

Taye told Ellen he'd planned to stay right by Idina's side with the midwife, but he had a change of heart once he saw her in pain.

But as he watched Menzel's face when the first pain hit, Diggs says, "I was like, "OK, I'm just going to be in this other room....'"

And Idina never opted for anything for the pain.

"No drugs," Diggs says. "She is a warrior."

Once it was time for the delivery (after seven or eight hours of labor- not too bad!), Taye got back into the action.

"I was holding her hands and cheering her on," he says. "I said I would look two times. I would look when the baby was crowning, and I wanted to look right when [son] Walker came out. And then when he came out, all the sudden it was like my inner gangster came out. I was like, 'Yeah baby, that's what I'm talkin' about, that's my boy!'

"It was crazy," Diggs says of his son's birth. "I couldn't control myself. It was like the Super Bowl, World Series, World Cup, everything wrapped up into one."

LOL! Walker was born on September 2.

Congrats to them! I was a semi-warrior and drug free for the first 18 hours. Total labor was 25 hours.

I believe it's very common in the Netherlands to give birth without anything against the pain.

Me too! First one no drugs and thought my pelvis would scatter. Needless to say, I opted for the epidural with the second. I highly recommend the epidural now. :0

Thanks for noting that we are some warriors for doing it natural. 12 hours total and it's no picnic but well worth it! Sounds like he is in awe of the experience and a proud papa already.

Wow, that's impressive. I wimped out on my first. 20 hours in labour and I couldn't imagine NOT having any pain relief. My second labour was 20 minutes long at the hospital, so there was no time for pain medication. It was still hell, so I can't even imagine what it would be like 7-8 hours without anything. WOW.

I had a natural birth too!! It's best for the baby. All the drugs you get winds up in the baby's system too!!!! I don't say this to make other moms feel badly. It just the reason why I decided on a no-drugs birth.

Yay, for someone in Hollywood not getting a pre-C-section.

i love them....
but fyi drugs dont affect the baby... or at least that's what i heard and experience says... My mom had her 6 kids using drugs and we have a perfect health... soooo i think drugs doesnt affect the bayby's system but i love them anyways...

no way. any woman who has been pregnant and given birth is a warrior no matter how they did it!
I'm in total agreement with Taye I got such an adrenalin rush during child birth. After my first son, I turned to the doc and said, let's do it again. (Yes, that was stupid. But man I was pumped!)

Yay for them! My son (now 7 weeks) was born naturally, it was 26 hours of labour and 2 hours and 40 minutes of pushing... and he was a hefty 9lbs 4.5oz and backwards. I figure if all those dames in Holland could do it (97% there have no medication) so could I. I just didn't realize it would hurt so much! I have a lot more grace for the epi-moms now :)

I think Idina looks so much like Glee's Lea Michele. I would love to see Idina guest star on Glee.

In the end, you get a baby out of it. There are no medals given out to those who go drug free in L&D. You get a baby. Anyone who bears a child, wether it be c-section or vag. (not sure if it would filter that word out) is a warrior. Drug free or not, the end result is all the same.
