Nicole Kidman Says Hollywood Is To Blame For Violence Against Women

Wow! What a thing to say about the industry that puts bread on your table. But is Nicole Kidman right?

The actress is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women and while addressing a committee about the topic, Nicole said the industry portrays females as "weak sex objects". She has finally come to a point in her career where she will no longer take part in these roles. PopEater reports:

"I can't be responsible for all of Hollywood but I can certainly be responsible for my own career," Kidman said.

If more woman took that stance, imagine how different the films we see would be?

What do you think about the notion that Hollywood contributes to violence against women?

That doesn't mean media doesn't influence, glorify, and encourage an already existing problem. For example: suicide existed logn before magazines full of overly skinny models-however 80% of suicides now are highschool/middle school girls who thought they were overweight.

I dont know about violence but it sure as hell creates a FALSE illusion of what women SHOULD be and what women are EXPECTED to be. Also it seems like the majority of the women characters in t.v. shows and in movies are just plain dumb. They make dumb decisions and act foolish, me thinks its cuz the MAJORITY of actresses in Hollyweird are so sub par that they have to write shitty scripts to suit the acting.

I think that Hollywood in general makes violence galmorous. But in reality killing people, beating people up, and violence against ANYONE (man or woman) is wrong. Another industry that promotes this is video games.

When I was a kid and would watch old movies on tv with my dad, he would always make a comment about the woman in the movie falling down or something and needing to be rescued by the guy. He was always right. It does make women appear weak and need a guy to take care of them. I think Nicole is right on.

who do we blame about the violence she's done to her face?

I can really go off on this one, but I'll keep it short.

1. Maybe she should have thought of her position as a woman before she took the movie roles that she now bashes. If very easy to flap your gums once you've got cash lining your pocket.

2. Violence against women has been perpetual and women throughout history have been trying to make advances towards equality...sometimes at the cost of their lives. Yet even in this day and age as we sit here behind our computer screens, young girls and women are undergoing female circumcision, being beaten, berated and trudged upon as if they were dirt. Equality comes when man says it comes or until we start enforcing the same means of beratement that they have inflicted upon us since the dawn of man.

3. Women of means should be fighting the real causes of abuse instead of what players are up on a film screen.

I appreciate what you're saying and agree with you for the most part, but I think it's wise of Nicole Kidman to stick to what she knows instead of trying to save the world elsewhere. She likely can do the most good by starting at home. The ones who are out trying to save the world in venues that they, honestly, don't have a lick of knowlege about are the ones I don't take seriously.

Of course violence against women has been around before Hollywood. But as an industry, Hollywood does glamorize violence as a whole. Hollywood, the news, video games, they all desensitize people to real violence. As for Nicole Kidman, at least she's trying to make a stand and create more awareness for a VERY important topic.

But did she really stop taking these roles that show women as "sex objects" because of her strong beliefs or have the offers stopped coming in because she's getting older?

Her role in the upcoming Nine seems rather sultry. It's possible to be sexy and strong without being a sex object. And there is something to acknowledging that not all stories are going to be about strong women. Whether those victim/objectified women roles are used gratuitiously is probably more the issue than the the simple fact that they exist. They have to exist - women like that exist. Luckily, it doesn't sound like there are many of them on this thread, if any. :)

All parts of society contribute to violence toward women, and Hollywood is part of society (for good and bad), ergo: Hollywood also contributes. As film consumers/movie goers, we can all take a stand.
Nicole Kidman is now in a position where she will be well heard, she managed to speak out, and the media reported it. In some countries, you should be so lucky...

What an interesting discussion - well let's be honest - on this superficial page (still I'm loving it)! As I assume the majority of you are women and your opinions sound so "healthy", let's start: Stop buying violent computer games to your sons and be aware of what they watch on TV!

If Hollywood "teaches" people to behave violently towards women, then what does botox faces, enlarged lips and other Hollywood behavior "teach" the public? Only youth matters?

That a requirement for most successful actresses to keep working is to try desperately to not age past the age of 30. It's sick.
