Gisele Bundchen is keeping herself busy in the weeks leading up to the birth of her baby – by working on earning her pilot’s license! She’s just passed the written portion and now just needs to do her flight test.
“Gisele hasn’t finished her license yet, but she did pass her written exam,” says Keith Douglass, president of Shoreline Aviation, a company that provides private jets and aviation lessons. “Now, there’s one more step along the way, the practical exam [in the air], which is coming up in another week.”
Gisele is learning to fly a helicopter, which is a fair bit trickier to handle than an airplane.
“She’s very dedicated. She flies at least three days a week. Flying a helicopter isn’t easy – it’s a handful, because you can’t stop flying and just cruise, but she’s doing great.”
“She’s almost to a point where she’s too big to be flying,” says Douglass. “She needs to be able to move the rutter around and she’s getting there.”
How exciting for her! A helicopter is definitely a different experience than an airplane. I wonder if Tom is nervous about her flying while pregnant? Although helicopters are much safer than some people think.
“We have pilots that fly right up to the end. She doesn’t go very high, maybe 500 feet or 1,000 feet, which is nothing. She’s always close and can get down quickly if she needs to,” he says.
What do you think about the company giving out this sort of information? I wonder how Gisele feels about them talking to the press.

Yes, the lessons are super expensive, aren’t they? My family are kind of aviation enthusiasts as well. There is nothing I love more than flying! It’s one of my favourite parts of any trip I go on. I used to want to be a pilot, but decided to do other things and keep flying as a hobby instead. I don’t think it’s a huge deal beacuse I just see it as learning something new; ie. biking or driving. Flying is just WAY more fun!
Im getting my pilot’s license one day. My bro who is 16 has his. Big whoop. They act like it’s such a huge deal.

My son (11) is a huge aviation nut (we all are) and I think it’s a huge deal. I hope to get mine, too, someday after we’re done saving and paying for his lessons, etc. lol

Written by an idiot who knows nothing about aviation. Being 500-1000ft does not make you safer it is a lot more dangerous. Any pilot or student pilot knows the saying “Altitude is Life”, something goes wrong you have time to work it. A fall from 500ft will kill you just as easy as 5000ft. I call bullshit on this “source”.

Tom talked about her helicopter lessons in a radio interview this morning on WEEI. He said that Gisele assured him its safe and that he has a friend who is a pilot as well. But it did sound like he would prefer for her not to be taking these lessons- he said this is “one [he] won’t win.”
But it sounds like she’s going to get a license in a week or so and then I doubt she’ll continue flying until after the baby’s born.
I know Tom and Gisele like to keep everything private so I doubt she’s thrilled that they’re telling everyone, but that’s what happens when you’re Gisele, right?
