The 2009 AFI Festival ‘Precious’ Hollywood Premiere

I hope people go out and see this movie. I read the book (Push) many moons ago and it was tragic and unbelievable. A story that stays with you. A story that changes you.

Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon, Will Smith, Oprah, Tyler Perry, Olivia Wilde, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, Lisa Edelstein, Paula Abdul, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon and Mo’Nique attended the ‘Precious’ premiere at the AFI Film Festival over the weekend.

I’m going to put the summary of the movie under the cut because there are some disturbing topics that are covered. Click on the continue reading link to read it.

Have you read ‘Push’ or are you planning on seeing ‘Precious’?

Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece Precious Jones, a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. Shes pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother, a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write. Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesnt know the meaning of alternative, but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain, Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

I usually call it a wig when someone’s hair is a hot mess :o )

And I am sick of seeing Harpo’s mug.

I want to see this movie because I know it will leave quite the impact on me, but I’m afraid also because it looks so tragic. But I guess that’s real life for you. I just never saw it with a soundtrack before.

  5. maiah912 says:

I’d love to see it but I’m also afraid I’ll embarrass myself by crying at the theater. =P

  10. Moreaces says:

This movie looks like its going to be very good, and well acted, however, like many posters,, I can see myself crying throughout the entire movie.

  21. bgduckie_01 says:

    yeah she does.

  22. elaine123 says:

    I don’t understand…why can’t you go the theater?

  23. kimmytoo says:

Because some people prefer crying like a goofball in the privacy of their own home.

  24. dholmas says:

I don’t know if this is a movie I can watch. Or I will watch it on PPV when it comes out by myself and have a box of tissues handy. From the trailers I have seen it looks very emotional.

  25. lis says:

I’m really looking forward to seeing this film. I heard about it quite some time ago and have been waiting not so patiently since. It does look like it’s going to be a wringer, but it also looks like it is going to be something worth the time to see.

  26. OutInLeftField says:

I’ll have to wait until it’s out on DVD as well otherwise I’ll end up crying throughout the entire movie and the other theater-goers will not be happy with me.

  27. CapturingLife says:

Same here. I am so anxious to see it but I just can’t go to the theater. I wonder if that will affect the ticket sales? People who just want to wait and watch at home in private.

  28. bgduckie_01 says:

yeah same here. i’ll watch it on dvd just in case…

  29. BoN says:

    Oprah’s outfit is cute

  30. dieselchicklett says:

This looks like a very heavy movie. The acting looks excellent but I definitely think it’s going to be very emotional and I’m going to shed a lot of tears. Can’t wait to see it…

  31. C. says:

    It’s a renter for me.

  32. elaine123 says:

Paula looks…different. Looks like she’s lost a lot of weight too.

  33. Anonymous says:

Mariah looks AMAZING as does this movie. These are not taboo issues or anything to not see a movie over. This is REAL LIFE VERA wake up and pull your head of of celebrity gossip land for a second and pick up a news paper. Geez.

  34. KodiakBear288 says:

She did not state that the topics were taboo. She just put the description under the cut since the issues are very disturbing and some people may not want to read what it’s about.
