Remember when Kate Winslet sued the UK paper Daily Mail for saying she lied about her exercise regimen? Well, Kate won and was awarded $40,000 in damages.
“I strongly believe that women should be encouraged to accept themselves as they are, so to suggest that I was lying was an unacceptable accusation of hypocrisy,” the 33-year-old mother of two said in a statement.
If you recall, Liz Jones of the Daily Mail wrote that Kate had “hollywooditis” and was lying about only doing 20 minutes of Pilates a day to stay slim.
The Daily Mail admitted the story was false, said they would publish an apology, and agreed to pay damages as well as Kate’s legal fees.
“I am delighted that the Mail have apologized for making false allegations about me,” Winslet said in the statement. “I was particularly upset to be accused of lying about my exercise regime, and felt that I had a responsibility to request an apology in order to demonstrate my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues, including diet and exercise.”
Clearly, Kate feels very strongly about this, and I can understand. No one wants to be called a liar! Does this resolution sound fair to you?

love her
She’s probably one of the realest in Hollywood.
Good for her. Embrace your body flaws and all.
I like her even more!

Actually, she’s spoken several times about having a huge problem with that. Not sure what you’re talking about.
She’s actually NOT “okay” with it. She’s spoken out several times about the airbrushing and retouching. Check it!
“…my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues, including diet and exercise.” Yet, she’s totally OK with having her body photoshopped for the covers of magazines. Personally, I think she looks great, but her logic is flawed.
I just saw “The Reader”. She has many nude scenes from many different and interesting angles and no body double and no vaseline on the lens. She has a real woman’s body and curves and it was surprising and refreshing to see someone confident enough to truly bare it all without any Hollywood magic to cover up the flaws. I think she’s amazing!
And after two kids! She has giant balls. I wouldn’t want my every flaw displayed on a 50′ screen for all the world to see/criticize. I’m confident but not that confident! lol
Sign off? I don’t think they have too much control over what happens with the pictures once they’ve been taken. If she said she had a problem with it AND she has a problem enough with a magazine giving false information about her exercise habits, I’d tend to believe her. She seems as normal as they come.
I get your point. “Why would she do the magazine interviews when she knows they’ll be (possibly heavily) retouched?” And that’s a good question indeed. All I know is that it’s part of her job to promote herself and the films she’s in, so it’ll be up to her to keep telling people that those magazine covers aren’t “real.”
You’re right, she has, but I’m not sure how much I believe that she actually meant it. I mean, couldn’t she have stipulated before signing on to do the cover, that she would not allow an extreme photoshop trimming 10 lbs off her body?
Yep, yep…
good for her.
good for her!
I love her and think she is fabulous!
Go, girl. Good for her for wanting to be all legit about this issue.
Good for her. Yellow journalism should be abolished.
Great!!!!!!!!!!
I’m so proud of her….she is such a great role model!
