More Evidence That Simon Cowell Is Soft

Simon Cowell has reached out in a big way to help a little 18-month old girl get the experimental cancer treatment she needs. The little girl, Sophie Atay, was diagnosed with a neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer earlier this year. Her mom has been working to raise the $800,000 needed for an experimental treatment. One of Simon's friends, X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke, told him of the mother's fundraising efforts and Simon gave the girl the remaining $160,000 needed!

"I'd told Simon about the situation and that there was no time to waste because Sophie needs the treatment immediately, and he decided to give her the money in a second," Burke tells the Mail. "Now we're hopeful Sophie will be on the flight to the U.S. today."

The treatment is said to have the possibility of raising Sophie's survival rate from 20 percent to 90 percent! It's so sad that not all families have access to some of these treatments due to the outrageous costs. What an amazing thing Simon did!

What an amazing thing for him to do. I love hearing about celebrities who do things like this.
This story really hits home. My little sister was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was 5, went through surgeries, chemo and a transplant and survived.
I really hope that this experimental treatment works and she is cured. She is too young to have to go through something as awful as cancer.

Wow, Kay. So sorry your family had to endure this and I'm glad your sister survived. I can't imagine how difficult that must be for a child or her parents.

Brilliant. That's hardly a drop in the bucket as far as he's concerned, and yet it could mean everything to this girl and her family. I love that he came through and I hope the treatment works.

Those statistics are amazing. It doesn't speak well for socialized medicine.

What a heroic thing to do. I'm glad he is using at least a bit of his money for a good cause.

I love him, seriously. Although he plays the "mean" judge, I get this feeling that he is a really nice guy.

A friend of mine's son had neuroblastoma. Had a bone marrow transplant at St. Judes in memphis. Relapsed a year later and had treatment at Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. He was 2 when diagnosed and is 10 now. St Jude is free for everybody and anybody. It is a wonder facility and turns no one away. Ever want to donate money somewhere think of them.
