Kate Moss’ Skinny Comment Causes Concern In The UK

Kate Moss has sparked controversy after being accused of making comments which could promote extreme slimming. The supermodel caused outrage after revealing she tries to live by the motto “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”.

She said in an interview on fashion news website WWD:

“There are loads of mottos. There’s, ‘Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’. That’s one of them. You try and remember, but it never works.”

Similar phrases can be found on pro-anorexia websites such as Starving For Control which carries the slogan “nothing tastes as good as thin feels”.

The 35-year-old British beauty – who has a seven-year-old daughter, Lila Grace – has now been accused of encouraging young people to develop eating disorders.

Dr Anthea Fursland, a psychologist who specializes in treating eating disorders, told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper:

“The term is used in anorexia websites to reinforce to themselves and each other to pursue thinness.

“I think it could have quite a large impact having someone so famous saying that. She is just giving credence to a belief that we are trying to move away from. If they’re at the cusp and feeling vulnerable, that might send them back into the pursuit of thinness.”

Model Katie Green - who launched the Say No To Size Zero campaign in the UK earlier this year – also blasted Kate’s remarks, warning that websites which encourage eating disorders will “go crazy” over her comments, believing she supports their cause.

“There are 1.1 million eating disorders in the UK alone. Kate Moss’s comments are likely to cause many more. If you read any of the pro-anorexia websites they go crazy for quotes like these.”

What do you think about Kate’s “skinny” comment? Will it encourage anorexia?

Can you imagine living your life where every single thing you say is twisted around? Whats the difference in saying this and putting a pic of Kate Moss on your fridge as motivation?

My teenager is a confident with her own body and is not influenced by skeletal “models”. I find it sad that our daughters think D list celebs and runway trash are role models.

um, hello- she’s a model! the only reason she has anything she has is because of her size. are we really expecting her to be a role model?

I don’t think it’s that bad. How about the obese people this quote saves?

I remember reading this quote a couple of days ago and it made me cringe. It does come out really bad. I hope she’s not pressuring her daughter to look a certain way. Childhood is hard enough without being pressured to be “skinny”.

I can’t believe I’m going to say this because I don’t like Kate Moss, but I don’t think she was necessarily promoting eating disorders just repeating something that’s probably reinforced in her industry. Sure, that wasn’t the smartest thing to repeat in an interview but it’s not fair to attack her for something she’s proably heard all her life and takes for granted.

she said it doesn’t work. it isn’t really that offensive. if she had said live by that then it would have been. Kate Moss has actually gained weight too.

I once found myself on a pro-ana “forum” on livejournal and thought I was going to faint. It was horrible how these kids were going; “I only ate an apple today, but yesterday I ate that damn muffin, so I’ve been running non-stop for 13 hours and I still feel fat.” It was so horrible that I sended a message to the peeps at LJ and they told me there was NOTHING they could do. I understand that now, but still…These girls and some boys are MENTALLY sick and need help!
