While John Mayer was giving an interview to Details magazine (it’s in their December issue), he encountered actor Gerard Butler. The two reportedly spoke briefly. When the interview asked John about the conversation, John explained the connection he feels with Gerard.
“We talked about New York . . .We’re in a bit of the same position of being branded womanizers.”
John said he dislikes the whole idea of dating/not dating someone for professional reasons.
“You just never know who’s going to come into your life,” he says. “To my mind, the only thing sicker than saying, ‘Wow, you’re a famous person and it would do a lot for my career to go out with you,’ is to say, ‘Wow, you’re a famous person and I like you and all, but I can’t do that to my career.’ I don’t think either of those is a good option.”
And what does John have to say to his detractors?
“What if I had a booth on the street and I said, ‘Attention, everybody who hates me: If you have a problem with me, I’m ready to hear your gripes! ….I will only be speaking to people who do not like me. Come out and let me have it. I will not speak back.’ “

No one would show up. It’s one thing to talk sh*t safely from behind your computer screen with some fake screen name. It’s another thing entirely to walk up to another human being, one who you have never met before, and go on a nasty, name-calling tirade based on rumors and hearsay you’ve taken from online gossip sites and tabloids. Those who say they would or – even worse – actually would have some serious basic human decency issues and a huge lack of manners.
Part of me hates him and part of me loves him. I’m so torn!

Dear John, I liked your first album the best, back when you were young and a little nerdy.
Yes, I know I’m out of touch, but if Mayer hadn’t dated Jennifer Aniston, I would never have heard of him. He’s no Gerard Butler.
