For aspiring singers who think Simon Cowell is a big old meaning, Rihanna has news for you: toughen up. She’s in London to perform on the ‘X-Factor’ (the British precursor to ‘American Idol’) and had some advice for the contestants.
“In this industry, if they can’t take the comments that the judges are giving them, then they won’t be prepared for this world.
“This world is a lot more intense and the comments can be a lot worse.”
I’ve wondered about this. People loved Paula Abdul because she was nurturing and supportive, but who are people more like behind the scenes of the music industry: Paula or Simon? Unfortunately, I suspect they’re more like Simon.

simon just tells them the truth.
The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.
Musicians and actors are always saying how mean and difficult agents, producers, etc are. I think in general people believe comments are just “don’t call us, we’ll call you”.

Just from dabbling in high school choirs, plays, and drama I don’t doubt Hollywood is mean. They know what they’re looking for and if you’re not it they’ll let you know.
What is a “big old meaning?”
First

If you look at some of the auditions, you should be glad there are people like Simon.
