Mischa Barton thinks being placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold was a “good” thing. It gave her the chance to take time out and reassess her life.
“I went to the hospital because of pain with my wisdom teeth and I ended up getting ‘put in’, but that’s because I was so overwhelmingly stressed out and upset.
“I think it was my teeth and the stress of having a new job and traveling. I was miserable. Actresses aren’t given the time to recover after stuff like that – you’re expected to bounce back from surgery and work right away again.
“I was shocked it went that far but I think it was necessary for me to take that time out. I’m so much more settled and calm now.
“Ultimately, it was a positive thing.”
Mischa also says that it could have happened to anyone! She added to Heat magazine:
“It’s something that could’ve happened to anyone – going into hospital and having a bad experience then being held on an involuntary psychiatric hold. It happens to more people than you’d know. It’s a common thing.”
Really? Do you know anyone that went into the hospital for pain and ended up getting admitted for psychiatric evaluation? I’d say it’s not such a common thing. Mischa must have really been acting out for the hospital staff to react in such a way.

I too believe it was because of drugs. She most likely took too many of something, or mixed her pills and caused some sort of reaction, but doesn’t want to admit that because then it would be public knowledge that she has a drug problem.
i think there’s much more to the story, but at least she was able to get some help.
I actually have a friend who works in a hospital and from what she says it does seem as though they put people in psychiatric evaluation all the time for not very significant reason I guess as a precaution type thing. If she was in an extreme amount of pain and really stressed out and exausted I don’t see why they wouldn’t put her in.. really.
I don’t see anything wrong with it at all and it’s good that the whole situation has helped her out emotionally. Now, her pose in that photo is so odd. It almost looks like her head is going to twist all the way around.
“actresses aren’t given the time to recover”, whereas people in other professions are!? try working at McDonald’s for a week, Mischa….ignorant, pretentious little #$%$#
Thankyou! Exactly what I wanted to say!
I’m sorry but I can’t believe that you can be put on involuntary hold for being upset, even if hysterical. Also I think she was there for 4 or 5 days. That seems too long for an episode. Even Britney Spears was out after 2 years.
reeeeeaaalllyyyyyy now! please who is she trying to fool. i have had my wisdom teeth out….you do not get put “on hold” because your mouth hurts. so sad that she is trying to pass this off as a credible story. she must still be high.
I work in a hospital and I can tell ya, people come in for one thing, often a physical complaint, but while they are there, their mental issues do often present more of a problem than their physical ones…
Does anyone know if this happened in CA? My guess is that she probably took too many rx drugs (hence her claim that it was pain)…she probably was doped up, depressed and said some things that made them hold her. She may have even made a half-hearted attempt on her life. Either of these things will cause an involuntary hold in psych in the state of CA.
can’t say if it’s a common thing or not, but i’m glad it helped her.
