Portia de Rossi Gives Elisabeth Hasselbeck Something To Think About

Portia de Rossi Gives Elisabeth Hasselbeck Something To Think About

Portia de Rossi was on 'The View' today and the very conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck asked Portia if she thought the word marriage was really that important for gay people.

“Take men and women. Women want all the rights of men, but they’re not asking to be called men,” Elisabeth said. “Do you think…is the word [marriage] more important than the rights?”

Portia tried to make Elisabeth understand her side of things:

“No, of course the word isn’t more important than the rights,” Portia responded. “Without the word, we don’t have equal rights.”

“Every citizen of this country should have that legal right to be married,” she argued. “Marriage the word actually does mean something because people who see a gay coupling as a lesser thing in society can continue to [think] it’s lesser than marriage when really it’s the exact same thing. The exact same love, the exact same commitment, love of family.”

Portia is legally married to Ellen DeGeneres because the two were married before Prop 8 banned gay marriage in California. The state let those who married during that "open window" keep their married status after the ruling.

you are way too proud of that. it doesnt affect you in any way, so why does it bother you so much? i would understand if it somehow affected YOUR life, but it doesn't, so don't stand in the way of other people's happiness!

Anonymous Anonymous said:

this statement is so ignorant. of course it affects others, it affects all of society. doesn't matter which side you're on, you can't claim it doesn't affect other people.

Kristina Kristina said:

Why do you say there is no need for gay marriage? We allow Atheists to get married, so clearly religion alone does not define it as it applies to our society. Gay couples deserve the ability to get the benefits and estate planning rights that come with marriage. In the eyes of the law, marriage isn't about religion. It is about the merging of 2 estates, and the ability for 2 people to do things for that estate (like make medical decisions for each other during emergencies, allow their spouse on medical insurance, be acknowledged as both being legal parents and guardians of children, joint ownership of property, etc.) The word "marriage" applies to so many laws that affect people in so many ways, it is unConstitutional to deny consenting adults these rights.

bia bia said:

I feel the same way. I'm a Christian and I understand why some Christians say they don't want to allow gay marriages because the church doesn't approve of homosexuality.. but it doesn't really make sense because Muslim people get married, so do Hindus, so do Atheists, Agnostics, Buddhists, Scientologists.. you name it! So marriage obviously isn't just a Christian union.. which basically negates the argument that gay people shouldn't be able to get married because of religious beliefs. It's absolutely ridiculous.

There are common-laws and living wills that anybody can ask for. I agree with you that marriage isn't about religion; it really boils down to legality & parental obligations since there is a chance that procreation may result from such a union (homosexuals can't have biological children & it's hard for them to adopt). Besides, who's to say that legalizing gay marriage wouldn't open the door for other groups (i.e. polygamous, human-animal marriage etc,) to demand for marriage rights as well.

bia bia said:

Human-animal is a lot different to gay marriage.

Everyone should be able to benefit equally. Just like healthcare. The gov't officials should have the same healthcare as "regular" people. I am sick and tired of all this hierarchy! No one is better than the other. And "true" christians/LDS/catholics/muslims/whoever should practice what they preach. Love=equality

Anonymous Anonymous said:

how does love equal equality? on what planet would that be true?? i love my children, but there is a definite hierarchy in my house!

Anonymous Anonymous said:

I would also like to add that it is not just "marriage". It is rights. When you are in intensive care they cannot see each other because they are not married or blood relative. That makes me sick to my stomach.

I totally respect everyones opinion, but at the same time we should respect others too. Even if they don't agree with what we believe in. That's also part of equality. Bashing and disrespecting others for speaking their minds it's not fair either. I don't support nor i'm agaist gay marriage. I have gay friends who happen to be part of my life, i love them and respect their personal choices, but i'm not going to go around disagreeing with everyone and disrespecting/insulting other peoples opinion and beliefs just because they don't support my gay friends rights. It is what it is and all we can do and hope for is that our love ones can be completely happy and that one day they can also feel like they have the same rights as everyone else.

I wish we could all just love each other and not fight about anything. In my opinion Ellen and Portia portray the true definition of love. It is a very rare thing to see especially in these times. They are more devoted to each other than many straight couples I know and that is all that matters.

Don't mean to be picky but Portia's statement can be viewed as discriminatory as well. She states that "citizens" of this country should be allowed to be married, what about all of the non-citizens (illegals) who live in this country? Should they not be allowed to get married?

If US citizens get married outside the US, it isn't considered legal either. If you want to get married outside the US, you have to make it legal in the US. All countries have different laws. We are talking about people who are born and raised in a land having the rights of that land. Apples and oranges.

I really hate it when people compare gay marriage to animal marriage, underage marriage and inanimate object marriage. They are completely different. We are talking about two consenting HUMAN adults here. It's quite ridiculous. Exactly like C said- it's like comparing apples and oranges. It's not the same thing.
I heard a politician say that gay marriage would "devalue" marriage. You know, I think people getting married on a whim, drunk, in a Vegas chapel devalues marriage.. but that's allowed.

I don't think gay people are lesser but I am against gay marriage. Marriage isn't something you get when you're in love. I think it would be better to have civil unions or common law unions with the same rights as married couples.
