Nicole Kidman reportedly has angered her Aussie neighbors with her attempts to protect her privacy. She has surrounded her 140-acre Australian estate with cypress leylandii trees, which can grow up to 65 feet high and 26 feet wide. Nicole’s also putting up a green fence and an earth mound to hide the house from the main road.
“They grow to an enormous height,” Mr Barnsley [a neighbor] said. “Yes these ones are small now but they are going to be huge. They are out of character with the area, they are not even Australian natives. We respect that Nicole wants her privacy but if she wants trees let them be Australian ones.”
These types of situations are tough. On one hand, I feel like, hey, it’s your property, do what you want. Yet your neighbors have to look at what you put up outside, too!
Do you think Nicole should consider her neighbors’ feelings or do what she needs to do to protect her property?

Whatever.
I once heard that in Japan, if you build/plant anything that obstructs the sun shining into your neighbor’s property you must compensate them financially. I don’t know if it’s just an urban legend, but it raises an interesting point. I would not want someone to plant crazy tall trees next to mine and give me permanent shade in my own backyard.
However, I find it hard to believe that the neighbors of a 140 acre lot own so little land that these trees really matter.
There may be another issue at play here: Leyland Cypress trees are also known to be the only tree that does not produce pollens (hence allergies), so Nicole may have particularly chosen these in the event that she, Keith or the baby are allergic to mold-sporing trees in the area. I have this allergy and know quite a bit about this, so this is the first thought that popped in my mind … she must have chosen this tree for more than just privacy reasons.

who cares vera very funny about you commenting about how the neighbors may feel, its her property, so just cause i want a palmtree in my backyard and my neighbors dont like the look of it and because I am Irish and not from the virgin Islands I cant plant one……sheesh!!! the things you even put on your blogs sometimes shouldn’t even be on here, what happened to privacy and ownership of property!!! she can do whatever she wants on her big big property land….lol
It’s her property, she can do what she wants. Chances are if she can put up trees that are going to be 65 feet high and 26 feet wide, her property is pretty big. It’s not like they are right next to somebody’s house. I’m assuming.
Some people just like to complain. Who fucking cares where someone elses trees come from?!
I would be a little bit worried about the new trees messing up the local ecosystem(s) bec Australia has been devestated by foreign species before, BUT I totally understand her need to have a private life and use trees for the natural privacy they will give her family. If the paparazzi were not so intrusive this would not even be an issue.
Considering her property is 140 acres does Nicole even have neighbors? Also they’re trees. It’s not as if she’s putting up ugly structures.
If she needs that much privacy perhaps her house should be more reclusive.
her property so she can do what she wants. if she’s paying that much for a place to live on, don’t you think she can do whatever else she wants on it? nothing obscene, of course; there is a line somewhere. i really doubt she’s living in one of those planned neighborhoods.
Hey it’s THEIR property! If the neighbors want a say in how it’s landscaped then they should help them pay the mortgage! They have NO say whatsoever.
140acres is huge and that means thats ALOT of trees. I understand that the neighbours are concerned about the trees. She should compromise and use natives…
I think they should whatever they want within reason, and if planting a bunch of trees is it, then go for it. I read an interview from Nicole, and she said the papz are relentless in Australia, so you really can’t blame her.
