Miley Cyrus has had enough. She got candid with Harper’s Bazaar during her interview.
“My job is to be a role model, and that’s what I want to do, but my job isn’t to be a parent. My job isn’t to tell your kids how to act or how not to act, because I’m still figuring that out for myself. So to take that away from me is a bit selfish. Your kids are going to make mistakes whether I do or not. That’s just life.”
I think Miley has a point. Being in the public eye doesn’t make her an adult ![]()
But she didn’t stop there, adding that people focus on the negative with her. She uses the controversial Vanity Fair photos as an example.
“Here, my parents are thinking they’re seeing a beautiful photograph by a major photographer, and the people of America want to see something dirty in that? It doesn’t make sense to us because [my family] doesn’t look for negativity. But people don’t want to say ‘What a great performance’ or ‘What a great shot.”No one wants to look at something like that and see the positive because it doesn’t sell a magazine.”
Okay… it’s true, negativity certainly does generate more publicity. Yet I think some of the criticism is because she does things that seem inappropriate for her age. Can’t she do topless photos (even if it’s her back) and pole-dancing once she’s an adult?
And really, how many people criticize Miley herself versus the adults around her who allow these things to happen?
Yet Miley admits she feels the pressure of it all.
“I got on the plane [to Georgia], and I was lying in my mom’s lap and crying and saying, “I’m so happy to be getting out of L.A.”
This sums up the challenges of working in show business as a kid. But what do you think: are we Americans just focusing on the negative with Miley?
You can read Miley’s entire interview in the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar, which hits newsstands January 12.

to an extent i feel bad for her. the teenage years are hard enough as it is, i can’t imagine how much worse it is when you are growing up in the spotlight….but then i remember how much money she has and i stop feeling sorry for her.
I think she makes good points and seems to convey them very elloquantly, therefore it can’t have come from her mouth LOL
i just want to smack her
She sounds like a very spoiled little girl. She might not get it until it is older, but the big issue is exploitation of little girls as sexual objects. Mass media doesn’t tend to bash her music or her talents, it the objectification of 12-15 year old girls that they rightly speak up about. She markets herself to the tween crowd, and that comes with extra responsibility. I think people just want her and her family to stop rushing little girls into the lifelong female competition of who is sexier. As Britney shows, that game will drive you crazy. Being sexy is fun, but you have to learn to love yourself for other reasons first in order to be healthy.
Pardon me, but tell me what is positive about a young girl who dresses like a grown woman? Where is the “good side” of that? I don’t classify myself as a negative or pessimistic person, but I don’t see anything good coming out of the sexualization and mass commericalization of a teenaged girl. Look what it did to Britney Spears. I see a head shaving and 5150 hold in this young lady’s future. And not because I’m “negative.”
Hey role model – GET OFF THE POLE!!!
You don’t see Miley crying about the $50 million she has in the bank because of her exposure to the public spotlight. In other words, Miley wants the money without the negatives that go with being a public figure. She wants to be able to slut around in public, get big paychecks and never be held accountable for that. Sorry Miley, accountability is something everybody has to live with, even princess Disney stars who were never taught how to behave like a lady instead of a slut.
I take my son to school every day (middle school) and I see a little bit of everything, I mean these girls dress so bad and they are so little that makes me sad, I wish I could get out of the car and pull some pants up or just show them that all that tight clothes is not good or looks good on them, so I don’t think that is just Miley who is giving them a negative influence, is so much going on every where, and what about there parents?
I have a toddler too so I’m not looking forward to whoever is going to be the it girl or what ever you call girls like Miley…
I’m hoping Miley doesn’t turn into a train wreck in a couple of years just to “shake up” her teenage image, we don’t need more of that.
BOO HOO SAYS THE NEW BRITNEY/ LINDSAY LOHAN R U SERIOUS….I HATE WHEN CELBRITIES PLAY THE ROLE MODEL CARD…NO 1 IS LOOKING UP 2 U SO PLS STOP IT AND U R A LIL HO!!!
Whoah, Miley looks old here
The funny thing is, the sheet covered more of Miley than the average two piece bikini.
ha ha Dacht ik ook. lol
But really, she looks like a 40something soap opera actress on that cover!
i know! they wayyyyyy overdid it with the airbrushing, yikes
To a point, I agree with Miley, there is alot of negativity in the world, but this is the world we live in, and this is the kind of stuff we deal with every day. This isn’t the kind of things Miley or her family deal with. They don’t have to worry about wondering when your next meal will be on the table, when you can pay your bills, keep a car, get gas, it’s all handed to her on a silver plater. She can have anything she wants. And her parents see her as a meal ticket. Which is why they let her pose provocatively at 15 or 16. They should have been smart enough to say no, this kind of picture isn’t the best idea right now. If Miley wants to pose like this, let her do it when she’s 18 or 19, or even older. And since then, Miley has done whatever she wants. H*ll, she’s probably drinking and smoking and her parents don’t give a crap what she does. I mean, we know she was sleeping with her much older boyfriend. This all wouldn’t have been an issue if her handlers would have been smart!
I agree! I can’t stop staring at her teeth, its like a bad car wreck or something!
she got some SERIOUS dental work done recently.
The next future train wreck…….lol
the next train wreck….LOL
It’s not only America though, we’re all in the same boat more or less
I agree with switchstance5, Miley has a point but not ALL of the negativity targeted towards her is uncalled for, she just has to accept that not everyone will think all of her actions are appropriate and she will be critiqued for that.
I think she has a point….but to an extent. It inappropriate for Miley to pose topless at her age a few years ago. And even though the parents are the ones who can tell their kids how to act and what not to do, by Miley doing things like this is only makes posing with your top off “cool” and in a way it’s like encouraging kids to do it.
I agree.
I feel we do focus on the negative. For Gods sake look at our news! I refuse to watch it for the simple fact its soooo depressing. Why can’t we have something called good news? Mix a little good in there with all the bad.
I’ve been saying the same thing for years. Why is the news always about death, criminal activity and disasters? Just once in a while throw in a feel-good story. And yep, America really does focus on the negative, it makes good news…
Yeah, I totally agree that it’s so wacko that parents use celebrities, at whatever age, as role models for their kids. That’s just insane. She said it very well.
