Fact Or Fiction: Adam Lambert Disses Susan Boyle’s Album?

According to Digital Spy, Adam Lambert had some less-than-kind words about singer Susan Boyle. The American Idol singer talked about his debut album coming out and not being able to topple hers.

“If only it weren’t for Susan Boyle! I’m happy for her success, but that album is terrible,” he told Gay Times.

The first time I read this, I thought maybe he was just joking around, but then he continued with by ripping on Susan’s cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses”:

“‘Wild Horses’ is the one that made me laugh the hardest. I just died when I heard it, I was crying with laughter. It was the most horrendous, sacrilegious treatment of that song!” he said.

Ouch.

What do you think? I’m trying to decide if I believe these are genuine interview quotes? Do you think he’s the type of person to bash another artist’s work?

  1. dholmas says:

I find him so obnoxious. Yes I have listened to his music and he sounds just like any other so called Pop Star out there.

  2. SusanSL says:

Adam is almost always a source for positivity. He is always supporting other artists and promoting their work–even if they are “competitors” on the pop charts. So, no, I don’t think this sounds like him and he has come out to say that he was misquoted. Anyone who thinks he is arrogant has not been paying attention to him and merely jumping to conclusions.

  3. Kristina says:

I am not a fan of Susan Boyle’s music…but she was inviting criticism to cover a Rolling Stones song when clearly that isn’t her genre. What is next, Back in Black by AC/DC? I am not a big fan of either artist, but they both do have talent. I don’t think that Adam speaking his opinion is that awful.

  4. anonymous says:

He did go a little overboard on the negativity. He could of just said that he didn’t like Boyle’s version of whatever cover she was singing.

  5. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I adore Adam. Since I think so highly of him, I am doubting these reports. I’ve seen him interviewed often and he usually has a mature way of handling criticism of himself…AND he does not come off as mean-spirited. He is typically nice to everyone. Soooo, until I hear from his camp, I doubt he said these things. Also, the people who claim he is arrogant…I really wonder if you’ve ever heard him interviewed? He comes across as confident, not arrogant. He seems like a truly nice person with a fun sense of humor.

I bought his album and really enjoy it. I didn’t buy Susan Boyle’s but I do think she is a talented lady. Am happy for both of them!

  6. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I also have to say that I love it when artists do their own renditions of classic rock, etc. That said, I haven’t heard Susan Boyle’s Wild Horses…now I HAVE to hear it. But I wanted to point out a few “weird” choices that I loved. Tom Jones covered Prince’s “Kiss” – that was fun. And Johnny Cash covered hmm…I think it was “Numb” by NIN? My senile brain might have remembered it wrong.

  7. Nina says:

Fiction. It’s all in the context. Please read the LA Times article on this. It’s the only rational, non-sensationalized take I’ve seen on this.

    http://www.smashingnews.net/2010/02/24/evil-adam-lambert-slams-sweet-susan-boyle-not-exactly/

And for those of you that just enjoy hating on this phenomenal man simply because he happened to be born gay…Get a freakin’ life.

  8. 8Ball says:

No one on this board is hating on him because he’s gay. You’re the one attacking people because they don’t like him/his music. You get a freakin’ life. You’re the narrow minded one here.

  9. Ariel says:

I don’t hate him. I just don’t enjoy his music, which is indistinguishable from any other songs that are currently popular.

Really, there are just so many reasons to dislike him, and none of them have to do with his sexuality.

What has Susan done lately? She sang on the “Everybody Hurts” cd for Haiti. She did a benefits concert in Denmark for Haiti. She sang as a guest at the San Remo Festival in San Remo Italy. She just sang in Spain and France. She will be singing in Germany next month and will be reappearing in Japan in April. I think a lot of people thinks she’s talented and like her album, Adam!

  11. DonnaJ says:

“Do you think he’s the type of person to bash another artist’s work?” Absolutely.

  12. Anonymous says:

Yes, READ the LA Times article referenced just above. There was context, and some other very interesting points made not only in the LA Times article itself but also by the “commentors” who posted. As one said, unless I hear an audio or video of the interview, I’m inclined to give Lambert a little leeway. He has shown in interview after interview after interview to actually be quite considerate. I don’t expect everyone to consume as much media as Lambert fans do, and so they are not familiar with him on anything but a sound-bite level, as is the case in so much of society today, but Lambert is continuously respectful and decent towards others in appearnce after appearance and if he weren’t authentically those things, he would have faltered long before now. British rags are historically known for sacrificing truth for sales, even more so than US “fluff” outlets, well known fact. And Gay Times has a long record of an “agenda” against Lambert. The blogosphere picked up on the more negative side of this story FOR HITS to their sites, plain and simple, no mystery here!

  13. Starry says:

Crikey! What a lot of vitriol directed at this guy who has already said (via his Twitter) that he has been misquoted. The press can be losers – writing stuff that twists what a celebrity says…and even making it up. Don’t believe everything you read people! I have heard that Adam Lambert is a great guy, and very sweet…god knows, I hate SuBo’s album…it sucks!

  14. Janey says:

I really hope Adam will clarify this. He said he was misquoted but never said about what. He didn’t even mention the article. I hope he does in the future.

  15. Kiwi Maureen says:

I’ll believe it when I hear a recording of the interview. He has always been very generous of other artists work and it seems unlikely that he would have been quite as blunt. He may well have said that he didn’t like the music on the CD but surely he’s allowed an opinion. I’ve read a few reports of the interview and each one seems to have been embellished a little more.
And yes, he is very articulate when interviewed. I was impressed the first time I saw him on 20/20.

  16. emarosa28 says:

    blah! blah! blah!
    guys…guys…just watch this video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR28I845yJM
a great singer did not insult an artist like him or her

  17. lizzy says:

    he who laughs last……….laughs best

  18. Cookie says:

This out of context lie did just what it was suppose to do–start fights all over the web between Adam’s fans and his bashers. People are such sheep believing that he would say this–just as it’s printed! So, all the bashers can go to sleep at night feeling so good about how bad they feel towards Adam Lambert. It’s the gotcha mentality which is so low brow.

Maybe those bashers will grow up and realize that they have been punked by this gay magazine. This mag or rag has been gunning for Adam since Idol. It’s a no-brainer that they’d find something juicy to cause a viral lie spread all over the net and the bashers fell for it.

It’s the new Kris vs Adam all over again except now–it’s the mentally fragile Susan Boyle! This is one of the oldest tricks in Rag’s history. Print something outrageous like, “Aliens landed on the lawn of the White House” or some other crap and sell it to those who are naive enough to swallow it.

  19. Flither41 says:

I watched AI when he was on and I HATED his tongue wagging out of his mouth while he screamed a song. He is a BROADWAY type of person and will not go far in the POP INDUSTRY. As far as Susan Boyle…. what a voice. True to herself and sings beautifully. I am gay and DID BUY her CD as I did not buy Adams. He’s IN LOVE WITH HIMSELF and that is the problem. He will make money, but will not be a POP STAR that people will go in droves to see. SORRY ADAM….

  20. JasmineP says:

It was Hurt… Johnny Cash’s cover is so much better than the original version, more emotional. But I also like NIN

  21. Anonymous says:

I think Adam Lambert is an amazing singer. I think susan boyle is just boring. She’s a good singer but she’s boring. I almost couldn’t get through wild horse cuz I was so bored with it.

  22. Anonymous says:

I think the exact opposite. susan seems more of an opra singer to me. Adam is an amazing singing.

  23. Anonymous says:

    tabloid crap at its crappiest.

  25. adam lambert would never say something like that he is sweet and kind thats one of the many things i love about him so people need to stop making him look like a monster by putting these things

  26. 1. he is not obsessed with himself
    2. he is a great singer
    3. that toungue thing he does is sexy
    4. i would do anything to meet him and see him in concert actually i alredy went to see him in concert and he was AWESOME

  27. mrs. Lambert says:

I don’t think he is the type of person to say all this stuff. He is sweet and kind and would never EVER say anything like that. I do not think he really said that.

  28. mrs. Lambert says:

i dont think he would ever say anything like that he is a sweet and kind person :) thats one of the reasons why i love him soo much

  29. Justine G says:

    Repulsive

    Adam Lambert is a joke.

    Adam Lambert is a joke!

  32. Scruffy says:

He strikes me a arrogant, so yeah I could believe it.

  33. Nina says:

If he strikes you as arrogant then you’ve obviously never seen any of his interviews. I’d suggest you watch his 40 minutes on Oprah on youtube. He’s the exact opposite of arrogant…sweet, self effacing, extremely articulate and thoughtful.

  34. Anonymous says:

At least I know of people who purchased the Susan Boyle CD. I don’t know one person who purchased or wants to purchase Adam’s. His 15 minutes of fame are up.

  35. Anonymous says:

I know many -over 500,00 to be exact….you must be very old and conservative!! You have never listened to his album so how would you know if you dont like it?? Susan Boyles songs are all covers, at least adam wrote his own songs or had help writing new songs!! You are probably very homophobic and thats the real reason you dont like him. He just raised 300,00 dollars for the arts programs for underprivleaged schools throughout the US- and personally delivered and sang a song for them..um, whats susan done??..thats right nothing!!!

  36. Anonymous says:

I don’t care what Lambert thinks, but from what I heard of her album, I HATE it. I don’t know anyone that owns it.

  37. blue hair says:

Not very nice, nor is it good pr, to say such nasty things about Susan Boyle’s album – even if it does suck. He’ll learn soon enough.

  38. smp209 says:

something about him really rubs me the wrong way

  39. Ariel says:

Is it that his makeup kind of screams, “Welcome back, 1990s”?

  40. Anonymous says:

At least Subo can sing and does not need to screetch and knock other artists down like this nasty creature.

  41. Scruffy says:

Wow – bitchy and judgemental all rolled into one. That poster is entittled to their opinion, dosn’t make him/her ‘old and conservative’ or ‘very homophobic’. I’m very happy for you that you like him, but he’s not that fucking great. I wouldn’t want to buy his album and no I’m not interested in listening to his shitty music either, so there.

  42. Ariel says:

    500,00 isn’t a number.

Did Adam Lambert “write” his songs the same way Avril Lavigne “writes” her songs? That’s not really saying much.

  43. Anonymous says:

I know first-grade math … and Susan Boyle has sold over 8.5 million albums world-wide in just 3 months!! She was also the No. 1 album on Billboard for six weeks straight in the U.S. and was the world’s No. 1 album for seven straight weeks. Her debut album was also the WORLD’S 2009 no. 1 album released for that year even though it was only released on Nov. 23rd (6 weeks) … and was only edged out by about a 100,000 albums by Taylor’s ‘Fearless’ for top U.S. 2009 album which had been available for the entire year. Oh yeah, Mick Jagger himself was quoted as saying that Ms. Boyle’s rendition of “Wild Horses” was superior and ‘more haunting’ than the Rolling Stones’ 30-year old version!!! And Adam Lambert—NOWHERE to be found on the charts!?!

  44. Ariel says:

Didn’t he get rude with the audience at one of his concerts a few months ago?

He does strike me as the kind of person who will run off at the mouth and not stop to think of the repercussions.

  45. Anonymous says:

lol no, that wasn’t true either. he just asked someone to stop talking so loudly in their phone during a private, small concert he gave… he was so polite and he even called her honey.
