Academy Won’t Apologize For Farrah Fawcett Snub

There was some buzzing this morning about the fact that Farrah Fawcett was not recognized in the “In Memoriam” montage at the Academy Awards last night. Some thought it must have been a mistake, but that’s not the case.

A spokeswoman for the Academy:

I would not say that it was an oversight,” Leslie Unger, spokeswoman for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, tells E! News. “No matter how carefully and how conscientiously people address who is included, there are people who just simply can’t be. In any given year there will always be some people that other people think should have been included and that there’s more justification for one person versus another,” says Unger. “It is impossible to include everybody.”

Craig Nevius, a close friend of Farrah’s is not buying it:

how you can discount Extremities [which earned her a Globe nom for Best Actress in a Drama], The Apostle [which earned her an Independent Spirit nom for Best Supporting Actress] and Dr. T and the Women, I don’t know.

Some are disgruntled, saying that the Academy made sure Michael Jackson was included when he had a much smaller resume than Farrah.

What do you think? Do you think she was snubbed because she was more well-known for her TV roles?

It makes sense to me! People just always want something to complain about.

  3. Anonymous says:

    WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. imagamble says:

why was michael jackson included in the academy awards? what movie was he in? what? we’re including videos now? Big snub farrah deserved better.

  5. lalaa says:

oh well……the oscar’s are over and she’s still dead. Let’s move on to another subject.

  6. marydoll512 says:

How rediculouse is that! They had people who weren’t even performers on that tribute and they didn’t include Farrah! She was and IS and American ICON for godsakes! She was the 70′s Marilyn Monroe!

  7. it’s really not that outrageous. name 5 other shows/movies she was in other than charlie’s angels. you can’t use google.

  8. Ed H. says:

If Michael Jackson can get recognized…so can she. Frankly, I never thought about it until I read this. But you wonder why the media hasn’t picked it up.

    IT´S RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
    THEY SHOULD HAD INCLUDED HER!
    SHE WAS BRILLIANT!
SHE IS PART OF THE TV HISTORY!
    SHE IS AN ANGEL!
    I cant believe they didnt.

I wouldn’t call FF an icon. That’s a stretch. You can’t please everyone but it was a bit rude to leave her out. Bea Arthur also.

  11. merce369 says:

Ridiculous. That’s what i think. She should’ve been included.

But she’s remembered anyway, thus she lives on

  12. DonnaJ says:

You must work for the Academy.

  13. Riviera says:

Why is everyone so surprised? She was a TELEVISION actress. If you want to see her honoured, why not blame the Emmy Awards? Michael Jackson released a couple of movies (some in the 80s or 90s) and one recently (“This is It”) and that’s probably why he was honoured. The Academy Awards is for FILMS, not TV. Big difference.

  14. YAYI says:

She should of been included period. I totally agree that instead of MJ they should of include her. Such a shame!

  15. They simply forgot about her..

  16. audrey says:

Farrah has many more film credits to her name than Michael Jackson. It would have made far more sense to include her than him.

  17. Anonymous says:

THANK YOU! People are letting their emotions get the best of them.

  18. Anonymous says:

    Um no she doesn’t.

  19. Anonymous says:

Michael was far more influential than Farrah. I think she should have been included but not at the expense of someone more influential like MJ.

  20. Anonymous says:

Why do they even have to bring up MJ? He deserved to be honored, just as Farrah did. Although he only had about two film credits to his name (Men in Black II, The Wiz) “Ben” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1973 and he performed it live at the 1973 Academy Awards. Thriller is also the only music video ever to be included in the National Film Registry.
That being said, I think it was a huge oversight to not include Farrah.

  22. EverSkye3 says:

    Ummmmmm, YES she does

  23. Anonymous says:

So what you’re saying is, her movies were forgettable. Maybe that’s what the academy thought too. Ms. Fawcett was definitely famous but it was more due to her looks and personal life than anything she did for the arts or the film industry. The Academy is full of snobs. They didn’t forget about her, they purposefully omitted her. What does that tell you? She was never “one” of them.

  24. Yatze says:

What about Maurice Jarre, you bonehead. He wrote the theme for Lawrence of Arabia and he wasn’t even mentioned. I don’t think being influential was the criteria for making it on the “list.”

  25. Yatze says:

What’s wrong with you Anonymous? “Extremities,” “The Apostle” bunch of other ones I can’t remember – all movies.

  26. Anonymous says:

Davis, who also says he stands by the decision about Fawcett’s absence, had considered including her, but ultimately felt her “remarkable television work” would be more appropriately honored at the TV academy’s Emmys (which she was). He also noted that several notable screenwriters were not included in the tribute.

  27. Anonymous says:

Davis defended the tribute’s inclusion of Michael Jackson, who was better known for his musical accomplishment than for his screen work, because the late pop star was the subject of a successful feature documentary last year.

  28. Anonymous says:

No one would classify Michael Jackson as a movie star, yet for the one lousy movie he made he was mentioned in the Academy Award tributes. It’s disgusting how this man is still idolized every day. Farrah was a movie star, point blank and she should have been mentioned. Academy Awards! SHAME ON YOU and DOUBLE SHAME on the people who determined who would be in the tribute!

  29. Anonymous says:

An award show that lasts 3.5 hours say they can’t fit four seconds of memorial of a 70′s icon in are a bunch of peanut heads.

  30. Anonymous says:

Farah should have been included… period

  31. Anonymous says:

No, she was NOT a movie star. She was a television star and celebrity. Michael Jackson was and will always be an icon. Get over it.

  32. Roseee1 says:

That was messed up, even my son who never even watched the show charlies angels knew who she was and even told me, “mama what about the blonde lady farah she died right before micheal?” He pointed out that what they did wasnt right, okay so they say they couldn’t put everyone up in the spot light but she was one of the prominent ones in the news! RIP peace my sister!

  33. Anonymous says:

Name 5 feature films MJ was in, You can’t because he wasn’t even in 5.

  34. Anonymous says:

Again, by that logic, the MJ’s “remarkable work in music” would be more appropriately honored at the Grammys (which he was… along with 8 million other programs).

Just excuses… that’s all it is.

  35. Anonymous says:

She was a movie star you dolt. Ask anyone that works in the film community.

  36. Anonymous says:

Your son is smarter that the Oscar producers.

  37. Anonymous says:

But the Oscars aren’t for TV!

  38. Anonymous says:

But at least he was in the memorial and Farah wasn’t. So there.

  39. Anonymous says:

lol then why wasn’t she honored?!?!?!?

  40. Anonymous says:

That’s the question everyone is asking! What’s the matter with you? Did someone drop you on your head when you were a baby?

  41. stephen says:

We lost a wonderful talent this year….Bea Arthur. The Oscar’s might have forgotten Bea but I haven’t.

I found this clip of Miss Arthur’s final interview with Bea discussing her career in her own words. The clip also shows Betty White, Carol Channing and Phyllis Diller. I think it’s for a show called, “Lunching with a Legend.”

I’d hate for a full interview with Bea or the other legendary ladies in the clip to go unseen.

    Cheers,

  42. I miss her! She was a great actor, I loved most of her movies.

  43. Too bad for her…But she is an icon.

  44. audrey says:

The Academy staff needs to learn the word respect. To omit someone so notably famous and recognizable is horrendous.

  45. Anonymous says:

I think it’s reprehensible that the academy not only did not include her but then defended themselves insensitively against those who were upset at not seeing her. The excuse of “not everyone can be included” is offensive. C’mon Farrah Fawcett?? Michael Jackson was in The Wiz and he was there, along with two dozen faces and names who, though nonetheless worthy of being acknowledged, had accomplished far more than the iconic Farrah Fawcett.

Pfft..shame on you Academy. Just say it, you f*cked up.

  46. DonnaJ says:

    Perfectly stated.

  47. Blue Hair says:

The Academy has really lost it the last couple of years regarding the “in memoriam” section…omitting such well known contributors such as Brad Renfro and Farrah Fawcett.

  48. Blue Hair says:

Bea Arthur? Dennis Cole? Dominick Dunne? Ed McMahon? Gene Barry? Henry Gibson? James Whitmore? Ricardo Montalban? Maurice Jarre? So many other greats who were involved in movies that died last year and weren’t even mentioned. Shame on the academy.

  49. Blue Hair says:

A disgusting omit. The producers should be ashamed.

  50. smp209 says:

totally agree! that dance routine was completely pointless

  51. Anonymous says:

I would rather have seen a tribute to so many other wonderful people who contributed to the film community, such as Farrah Fawcett, than see those stupid dancers dancing to the Hurt Locker.

  52. Anonymous says:

It’s sad they didn’t include her. It was shocking last year that they didn’t include Brad Renfro. He died about a week before Heath Ledger and he had some wonderful work.

  53. DonnaJ says:

    Amen!
