Son Of Michael Douglas Sentenced To Five Years In Prison

Cameron Douglas, son of actor Michael Douglas has been sentenced to five years in prison for dealing drugs. The 31-year-old was handed the sentence in New York today with the judge, Richard Berman, telling him it is his "last chance to make it."

Cameron was given only half of the ten-year sentence he was facing, with credit for eight months already served. Michael and his ex-wife, Diandra Douglas, were both at the sentencing to their support.

Cameron spoke at the sentencing:

"I apologise to my family and my loved ones for putting them through this nightmare of my making."
He added: “I ask for an opportunity to be a role model to my younger brothers and sisters.”

Cameron was arrested in a New York hotel in 2009 and later pleaded guilty to possession and dealing methamphetamine and cocaine. Members of the family submitted letters to the judge, asking for leniency. The judge said he had taken the letters into account, but too many treated Cameron as a victim.

The judge also slapped Cameron with $25,000 in fines and sentenced him to serve 450 hours of community service.

What do you think of the sentence? Fair? Too lenient?

What a crock!!!!!!!! Double standard, too bad he didn't have Judge Judy or even Judge Hatchet. I guess now every celeb kid is gonna get letters together and blame mommy and daddy for their screw ups.

I really hope his family doesn't swoop in and pay his fines, thinking they are just helping him out...

i'm sure his family's celebrity had a lot to do with the time he was sentenced (which isn't much for his crimes)

I think it's a fair sentence. I do wish this judge would reside over all celebrity cases from now on. Maybe we could elect him! ;-)

It pays to have rich and famous parents.

5 years is a hell of a lot better than 22 minutes like most celebrities get. i can't get over how strong the douglas genes are - they looks identical!!!

Wasn't the mandatory min sentence 10 years??? A Joe Shmo would have gotten at least that..... Not fair!

He deserved to do the 10 years for dealing plus another 10 for smuggling heroin into jail in an electric toothbrush. How many liveds did he destroy when he CHOSE a careerpath of selling crack?

Yes, it seems fair to me. He wasn't trafficking drugs. What isn't fair is that if he were a kid from a poor family, living in the projects with a record of "small" crimes like stealing a computer he would have been put away for 15+ years. Where is the rehab for society in that?

He was caught with $18,000 worth of crystal meth in his hotel room. How could you possibly think that he wasn't trafficking drugs??

it could have been fifty year if he was BLACK?

why bring up the race issue?? this has nothing to do with race.

Being a parent I understand his fathers plea. But true love allows the child to suffer the consequences of their wrong doing - it's tough but in the long run it will hopefully build character in their lives. So yes - he should be sentenced the same amount of time that anyone else would.
