Heath Ledger’s family recently opened up to PEOPLE about they keep the memory of the late actor alive. Ledger’s sister, Kate, told the magazine,
He is alive in my heart and in my head. Every day I talk to him,”
Ledger’s family were at the sixth annual Australians in Film Breakthrough Awards in Los Angeles. Kate and Ledger’s mother, Sally Bell, were on hand to watch Colin Farrell present up-and-coming actress Bella Heathcote with the Heath Ledger Scholarship. Kate said,
It is very special. It’s honoring our boy so we couldn’t be prouder and we think it is an amazing scholarship that is going to give so many opportunities.”
His mother added,
He had a huge passion for acting. That was the most important thing for him. It wasn’t about the money. He had such a passion that just showed through regardless of how big the role was.”
The family said they take comfort in knowing that Heath has been immortalized in film, yet it is still too painful for them to watch his films.
His mother said,
We find that too difficult.”
Bell also gushed about her granddaughter, Matilda, Ledger’s daughter with actress Michelle Williams.
She is amazing. We keep in touch with Michelle and Matilda a lot. We spend as much time together as we can as a family and on Skype and phoning.”
My heart goes out to them, it must be so hard.

Heath was their son and brother. I don’t understand what you mean about “riding his coattail.” I hope you never have to go through the pain of losing child. As far as the drugs, I also hope you nor any of your loved ones ever falls prey to addiction.

What are some of you talking about? ‘riding his coat tail’, ‘wish family go away’ crap? His family and friends have been very private of Heath and his relationships (with fam and friends) and of course Matilda. I agree, calm down. I think it is nice to hear every now and then about their feelings about Heath, Michelle, and Matilda. They are family.
If you don’t care about anything that has to do with Heath, then maybe you should just ‘go away’. Many of us will always, always miss him, love him in our own way, and will always follow him in our own way.
Now it is my turn to ‘calm down’, I suddenly felt very passionate and sensitive to words that I don’t normally pay attention to.

Wish the family would just go away. Heath was such a private person, it feels weird that the family keeps talking to the press.
Um, they were at an awards ceremony where a scholarship they started in his memory was being given. If that isn’t an appropriate time for them to be asked about him, then I don’t know what is. And by the way, he wouldn’t have been who he was without his family, who obviously love him and loved him very much.
