‘Rescue Me’ is one of those songs I play whenever I want a “pick me up.” It just never fails to get me going, even if the lyrics are about having someone come “rescue me.” The singer of that iconic song, Fontella Bass, has died. She was 72 years old.
Fontella reportedly died from complications stemming from a heart attack she suffered three weeks ago. She also suffered a series of strokes over the past seven years, according to her daughter, Neuka Mitchell. Neuka said of her mother:
“She was an outgoing person. She had a very big personality. Any room she entered she just lit the room up, whether she was on stage or just going out to eat.”
‘Rescue Me’ was Fontella’s biggest hit, reaching #1 on the R&B charts and #4 on the Billboard charts in 1965. She is survived by four children. Below, you can watch her singing her iconic song.
