OK I am a huge boy band fan so this cover makes me a bit giddy!  Boy bands have been and still are big business, and 3 of the most popular boy bands of the last 20 years, New Kids on the Block, 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men have teamed up for one of this summer’s hottest tours – The Package Tour.  This week’s Parade Magazine has released it’s 2nd annual Boy Band Issue and has released 3 separate covers to commemorate The Package Tour, one for each group.

The magazine also spoke to members of all 3 groups and they dished on growing up in the spotlight, what it’s like dealing with fame, and of course Justin Bieber.  Here’s a sample of the interviews;

On the lucrative business of boy bands:

“We’re the best-kept really big secret going right now. We are a successful small business. It’s us and our customers. The more satisfied our fans are, the more satisfied we are.”

—Donnie Wahlberg (New Kids on the Block)

On today’s boy bands and young stars like Justin Bieber:

“Thinking back to other boy bands and Justin Bieber—people go through a natural life evolution. Everyone knows when you’re 18 you get restless and you want to move away from home and start experimenting. It’s fascinating that we don’t apply [that knowledge] to famous people.”

—Donnie Wahlberg (New Kids on the Block), parade.com

On their early fame:

“It’s just a peculiar position to be in. A large percentage of the population treats you like you can walk on water, and others treat you like you’re not worth [anything.] The truth is somewhere in the middle, and to find that truth is the real struggle. If we believed the adoration of all the girls, we could easily have lost our way; if we believed the spite of the naysayers, we could have lost our way in the opposite direction. Fortunately, we had each other.  We didn’t allow anyone to get too carried away.”

—Donnie Wahlberg (New Kids on the Block), parade.com

On their fans:

“They range from 7 to 70. We have the parents and the kids who listened 20 years ago, and now those kids have kids they’ve passed the music down to.”

—Nathan Morris (Boyz II Men)

“It’s weird calling them ‘fans.’ I mean, we love to rock the house and they love to play their role in that as well. But offstage, it really is a family. There’s just a ton of love.”

—Joey McIntyre (New Kids on the Block)

On the excitement of touring with NKOTB:

“For us, this is kind of a dream scenario. You get to tour with the group that basically invented the current boy-band genre.”

—Drew Lachey (98 Degrees)

On what they miss about the 1990s:

“My 20s.”

—Nick Lachey (98 Degrees)

On how they’re different now:

“We’re better dressed.”

—Justin Jeffre (98 Degrees)

OK I have to admit, I went to see The Package Tour when it was in my city and I absolutely loved it!  It was such a great show and to get to see all 3 of these groups at one concert was amazing! I definitely need to pick up a copy of this week’s PARADE.  All 3 covers hit newsstands on Sunday, July 7th.
