SANDRA OH Leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ After 2013-2014 Season

The 44th NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles

OMG! ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ is going to experience quite a loss at the end of the upcoming season. Sandra Oh announced yesterday that she’s leaving the show. Dr. Christina Yang has been on ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ from the beginning, and she’s definitely one of the most interesting characters on the show. Sandra released a statement about her exit.

“It’s been a great privilege to play the character of Cristina Yang on (Grey’s Anatomy) and I am both sad and excited to see where this, her final season, will take her. It was an emotional and deeply creative decision for me and I feel fully supported by (creator Shonda Rhimes) and the writers. It’s so rare in an actor’s life to be able to explore and grow a character so fully, so completely.”

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ creator Shondra Rhimes released a statement about Sandra’s departure as well.

“…that story isn’t about her leaving the show as much as it is Cristina Yang’s growth as a person and as a surgeon. Cristina Yang is not going to magically decide she wants babies, no.

“Over the past 10 seasons, I have been made better by Sandra’s trust, faith and friendship and I can’t quantify how grateful I am for her collaboration on a character we both love so deeply. This year is going to be bittersweet for us – we’re both going to savor every moment of Cristina Yang and then we’re going to give her the exit she deserves. And when Sandra walks out of my door, Grey’s Anatomy will once again be forever changed.”

Oh boy. Don’t assume, however, this is the end of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ ABC said in a statement of their own:

“It’s our intention to have Grey’s on the air for many years to come, with as many of the original cast as possible.”

Ellen Pompeo’s and Patrick Dempsey’s contracts are up for renewal as well. We’ll see how this goes. I already can’t imagine ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ without Christina Yang!
