Oh please, like your family was so cool in the ‘80s!
From Adam Sandler’s production company Happy Madison, and inspired by writer and Executive Producer Adam F. Goldberg’s own experiences, comes a hilarious new comedy that balances humor and heart. The Goldbergs are a loving ‘80s family like any other, just with a lot more yelling. Mom Beverly is a classic “smother” while Dad Murray is a gruff, hot-tempered father. As the youngest of three kids, Adam is crushing on an older woman and getting schooled in the ways of love by a shameless Don Juan of a grandfather, ‘Pops’. Thanks to the magic of videotape, Adam captures every crazy moment.
Videotape! Oh boy – that’s just one of the many things to miss about the 80s, right? I just had a conversation with my daughter about TV programming when I was a child and she JUST COULDN’T believe that I only had a handful of stations. She actually gasped when I told her cartoons were pretty much only available on Saturday mornings. But how amazing were those Saturday mornings when they finally came?!
Scrunchie socks, Keds sneakers, an obsessive love of The Goonies, wanting to BE A GOONIE (yeah I said it), Pac-Man, He-Man, disowning friends because they were on the wrong side of the Cyndi Lauper – Madonna music battle, scratch and sniff stickers, Ghostbusters, Garbage Pail Kids and their collectable cards (why did I have them all). I mean… I can go on and on. I LOVED growing up in the 80s. LOVED IT! Wouldn’t have it any other way. Such amazing stories to tell.
So The Goldbergs is right up my 80s-loving alley. I’m all over it! We actually had a chance to check out a few scenes from the first episode and they hit it spot on. I can appreciate it more because I lived through it. Now sprinkle in Jeff Garlin from Curb Your Enthusiasm and you have me hook-line-and sinker.
Want to see the full cast line up? Here’s a look at the main crew:
The Goldbergs stars Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids) as Beverly, Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Murray, George Segal (Don’t Shoot Me) as Pops, Hayley Orrantia (The X Factor) as Erica, Sean Giambrone as Adam and Troy Gentile (Good Luck Chuck) as Barry.
