Kate attended the wedding of her first cousin over the weekend – accompanied by her parents, brother, and sister – at the Dorchester Hotel in London. The problem with this is that the hotel is owned by the Sultan of Brunei… who recently imposed some seriously horrible anti-gay legislation. As a result many A-listers and other royals have been boycotting properties owned by the Sultan.
Even though Kate snuck in and out through an underground parking garage and her attendance wasn’t a public spectacle, many members of the public are speaking out about the fact that she attended at all. In my opinion, boycotting the wedding of a close family member for political reasons – when the members of the royal family are supposed to be politically neutral – would have been an even bigger misstep. She can’t get back those moments with her family, and she’s already given up a lot of family time due to her marriage.
For the record - that polo match that Prince William and Prince Harry played in? It was also on a property owned by the Sultan – but no one seems to be giving them much flack.
