This is huge royal news!
King Juan Carlos of Spain, who has been the ruler of Spain for nearly 40 years, announced yesterday that he would be abdicating the throne in favor of his son, Crown Prince Felipe, The Prince of Asturias. While in some countries, such as The Netherlands, it’s common practice for the monarch to abdicate in a form of “retirement,” in Spain – as in the United Kingdom – the monarch typically rules until death. In a televised statement, which aired a few hours after he handed his formal resignation to the Prime Minster, The King said,
“it is time to hand over to a new generation — younger, with a lot of energy — that can, with determination, take on and carry out the changes that the current situation demands, and to face with intensity and determination the challenges of tomorrow.”
