Katherine Heigl Says Her Acting Career “Turned On Her”

katherine heigl (1)When Katherine Heigl starred in the then-new hit ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ she was a star on the rise. Then she starred in the hit movie ‘Knocked Up’ and looked like she had a real-shot at the A-list. Yet, as we all know, things didn’t go smoothly for Katherine. She opened up about how her career “turned on her” in an interview. RELATED: Preview of Katherine Heigl’s new show, ‘State of Affairs.’

Katherine told Marie Claire UK (via Us Weekly):

The thing that was my best friend for a long time [my career] suddenly turned on me. And I didn’t expect it. I was taken by surprise and angry at it for betraying me.”

Katherine, who’s slated to return to TV in the new series ‘State of Affairs’ this fall, blamed her career downfall on her movie choices.

I had an amazing time. I love romantic comedies. But maybe I hit it a little too hard. I couldn’t say no. I stopped challenging myself. It became a bit by rote and, as a creative person, that can wear you down. That was part of why I took that time off, to ask myself, ‘What do I want? What am I looking for?’ and shut down all the noise.”

Hmmm. Katherine did have some bombs, and ultimately that is what stalls acting careers. Her comments, however, didn’t help her any, such as refusing to enter her name for an Emmy Award the year after she won because she didn’t feel the material she’d been given on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ merited a nom. True or not, the statement was impolitic at least, downright disrespectful at worst. Then she criticized ‘Knocked Up,’ the movie that made her a star, for being “sexist.” Again, true or not, it probably wasn’t the most appropriate statement to make. Who can go out and publicly criticize their colleagues and bosses and not face repercussions? I suspect those comments may have at least contributed to her career stall.

However, when all is said and done, I think Katherine is a talented actress. There isn’t a lot of great material out there for women, especially in movies. I hope she’s able to experience a career resurgence. I know I plan to check out ‘State of Affairs’ this fall!

I wonder how many extended trips to the casting coach where required for this new chance.
