Was Sofia Vergara’s Emmy Skit Sexist? Sound Off!

Did you see Sofia Vergara on the 2014 Emmys last night? The ‘Modern Family’ star was literally put on a pedestal while the President of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Bruce Rosenblum, made his presentation about the Academy, what it does, etc. While he was talking, Sofia stood on a pedestal that rotated, as if she were a statuette. Bruce ended his speech with:

We never forget that our success is based on always giving the viewer something compelling to watch.”

Of course it got a laugh, since Sofia had been flaunting her curves on the pedestal as he spoke. Well, while the audience might have thought it was funny, not everyone was amused. Think Progress wrote:

Sofia Vergara was perched atop a giant lazy Susan like a sports car at an auto show, giving the audience a 360-degree view as the ground rotated beneath her, while the CEO of the Television Academy, Bruce Rosenblum, stood next to her and talked about… what was he talking about? Yeah, I don’t remember, either; I was distracted by the utterly tone-deaf, cringe-inducing spectacle that was the over-the-top objectification of a woman who is far, far funnier than the “I’m not from this country, but look how hot I am!” material she’s typically given. Vergara is obviously complicit in her objectification, and maybe she’s really enjoying it, but that doesn’t make the optics any less discomfiting.

Jezebel added:

She was treated like a literal object.

Even Katie Couric tweeted:

I love @SofiaVergara but did anyone find that schtick somewhat offensive?

When Us Weekly asked Sofia about the concerns about sexism, she said:

I think it’s absolutely the opposite. It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself and enjoy and work and make money. So I absolutely think it’s ridiculous and somebody who started — and I know who she was — has no sense of humor and should lighten up a little bit.”

Of course, you have to wonder if Sofia had any options about how to respond, considering politics and all (and Jezebel made a good point about it, too). She did agree to do it. The Emmys haven’t found Sofia funny enough to award her with an Emmy yet. She wasn’t even nominated this year! But I’ve gotta ask: what do you think?

Sofia regularly sets Latin women back 20 years with her her act and the bs she says. Even if this wasn’t meant to be sexist she’s said her fair share of objectifying things. For example that allure issue where she reduced Latinas to their breasts and ass.

  2. says

Sofia’s emmy skit sterotype latin women when she shake her booty on a pedestal. It similar to a black woman sterotype who shakes her booty.
