Although the rumors of marital problems for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have been fairly intense over the last few months, word has it their decision to divorce has been a long time in the making. They’ve been in marital counseling and have actually been separated for quite a while.
E! News reported that Ben and Jen were in marriage counseling for two years. Their divorce announcement comes on the heels of a ten month trial separation. A source explained:
They grew apart. They were great parents together but they were not always on the same page.”
Well, I guess that can happen after ten years of marriage, especially in Hollywood.
Sources told Us Weekly that Ben and Jen want the split to be “amicable.”
They don’t want this to be War of the Roses. They want it to be simple and this takes the drama out of it. It is important for them to keep this nice and efficient for the sake of their family.
“They’ve been married for a long time and tried to make it work for many years. They eventually realized this is the best thing to do for their family. They don’t want it to be contentious. A lot of people say that but they are doing things to ensure that it won’t be. There is a lot of love there but, they are doing what is best for everybody.”
It’s amicable enough the Ben, who reportedly has been staying in hotels during the trial separation, will actually move back onto their Brentwood property, but he’ll live in a different building than the main house where Jen and the kids will be. That will definitely help with co-parenting!
There have been some rumors that Jen was holding out until after their tenth wedding anniversary (which was on Monday, June 29) to get a more favorable divorce settlement. A marriage that has existed for at least ten years is considered a “long-term” marriage in the California courts, so spouses can get spousal support for an indefinite time period, compared to half the length of the marriage if the couple was married for less than ten years. However, sources told TMZ that Jennifer has plenty of money in her own right and doesn’t need spousal support. The issue is dividing their property since they didn’t have a prenup when they married.
As to what caused the problems, sources close to Ben claimed to TMZ the two simply want to lead different lives. Sources close to Jen, however, say she got fed up with his drinking and gambling. Ben has made no secret of the fact that he doesn’t like being “Mr. Mom,” and Jennifer has been open about the fact that she’s the more hands-on parent. Perhaps family life doesn’t suit Ben?
