If you were on twitter yesterday, then you probably saw Paula Deen’s new “flub.” A picture came out on her twitter feed of herself and her younger son, Bobby Deen, posing as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. Sounds harmless, right? Well, Bobby’s face was painted brown, presumably because Ricky was Cuban American. Twitter exploded.
The tweet was quickly deleted, but it was too late: people were already re-tweeting it, including media organizations like The Hollywood Reporter:

So what was Paula’s explanation? She released a statement via her publicist:
This photograph is from a Halloween episode of Paula’s Best Dishes that aired in 2011. Paula immediately had this picture taken down as soon as she saw the post and apologizes to all who were offended. As such, Paula Deen Ventures has terminated their relationship with this Social Media Manager.”
Why Paula and Bobby EVER thought it was okay to pose for a photo in brownface is beyond me (even in 2011). I’m not sure I feel much better knowing it was from 2011, but I don’t blame her for firing the Social Media Manager. She’s trying to move back into the public eye: this was a DISASTER. It’s unfortunate she even had the picture available. Does it make you feel better knowing this photo came from before she lost everything after admitting in a deposition to using racial slurs?
