Gwyneth Paltrow was a keynote speaker at the #BlogHer15 conference this year, and she was very open and honest about how she handles life in the limelight, from how she helped prepare her kids for her split from their father, Chris Martin, as well as how she deals with negative press.
Gwyneth said that when she and Chris announced their “conscious uncoupling,” she told their kids, Apple and Moses:
You know Daddy and I are famous and there’s going to be a lot of stuff out there. I can’t control what you’ll see. But you know what’s real and how much we love you.”
It sounds like they talk to the kids about the “inside world” (what happens in their life) and the “outside world” (what’s reported in the media). Smart strategy for dealing with life in the public eye with kids!
She also talked about how she and Chris managed their split.
I’m very, very lucky that I have a partner who’s willing to do it with me in a really collaborative way. I’m really for Chris and he’s really for me and our children are our priority.
“What that really means is: Even if you hate me and never want to see me again, we are going to brunch.”
LOL! I guess that’s the reality of divorcing someone after you have kids together: you still have to be in each others’ lives if you’re both going to be active parents to your kids. That’s just the reality of it.
Gwyneth also talked about how she deals with the not-so-nice things that are written about her.
I definitely don’t read any tabloids. You really have to find a way to separate the words of people you respect – stranger or not, but respectful content, positive or negative – and people who are just in pain and projecting their own s— onto you.
“If you read something bad about yourself and it stings you I’ve learned that somewhere that’s a judgment I’m holding about myself so I’ll try to work through that.”
That sounds like a healthy way to deal with life in the public eye!
