The people at ABC are STILL answering for the shocking death that occurred towards the end of last season of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ By now I’m assuming I don’t need a spoiler warning to say that McDreamy, Patrick Dempsey’s character, was killed off last season. Fans were NOT happy that Meredith and McDreamy didn’t get their happily ever after. Yesterday the ABC execs answered for that shocking turn during the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour.
ABC President Paul Lee said:
Patrick obviously has lots of interests outside. He’s very big in motosports. [Creator Shonda Rhimes] decided that was the way to go. We’ve seen the pitch for Grey’s next season, and the show reinvents itself again.”
It was a surprising move since Patrick had just signed a two-year contract, so it wasn’t like his contract was up and he decided not to renew. He himself said that he wanted to “try something different,” that his character’s fate was decided “very quickly” and “there wasn’t a lot of discussion.”
A source said there was a fair amount of tension between Patrick and some of the other cast members, saying “there was no love lost,” so perhaps that played into it.
When Shonda Rhimes met with the TCA reporters, she said that killing off Derek was the only way to preserve Meredith and Derek’s love.
What were the options? Either Der was going to walk out on Mer and leave her high and dry, and what was that going to mean? That would suggest the love wasn’t true, the thing we had said for 11 years was a lie.
“Meredith and Derek’s love had to remain Meredith and Derek’s love. As painful as it was for me as a storyteller, the only way to preserve what felt true to me was Derek was going to have to die for that love to remain honest.”
Hmm… That doesn’t really make sense to me, but writers’ minds can work in strange ways ;). Now that we’ve all had some time to digest the shocking turn of events, I’ve gotta ask TWO questions:
