Kelly Rutherford is opening up about why she opted not to send her children back to Monaco on August 7, as the Monaco court had ordered, and why she keeps fighting this custody battle with her ex-husband.
Kelly said their time together in the United States had been wonderful until the time neared for Hermes and Helena to return to their father.
They were totally great the entire time. We were painting, horseback riding. Then right when they knew they were going to go back, they got really panicky. My daughter was crying, my son started saying, ‘Mommy, I’m afraid.’ “
Kelly said it was her children’s reactions to the idea of returning to Monaco that made her decide to act.
If I put them on a plane, I realized I may never see them again. I sent an email to Daniel telling him where we were. I just needed a moment to figure out what to do.”
I wonder why she thought she wouldn’t see them again once they returned to Monaco? It was the judge in Monaco who ordered them to spend the summer in the United States! It seems like the judge was trying to promote her relationship with the kids. This is what Kelly just doesn’t seem to get.
Kelly had this to say about getting to spend the summer with her kids.
[It] was the first five weeks straight that I’ve had with my children in six years, since Helena was born. It’s hard to describe that to someone.
“My goal is their well-being and that they’re safe, happy, healthy kids. It’s scary. My kids have been through a lot. I’ve done everything I possibly can to let them think that everything is normal.”
The former ‘Gossip Girl’ star is due back in court in Monaco on September 3.
This whole time, what I’ve had to do is take an overall situation that’s so bizarre and try to keep my kids healthy. I have to keep knowing if I’m okay, they’re going to be okay. I don’t want them to be fearful. My children ask me all the time if I am still fighting for them …. I always tell them the day will never come when I say no.”
The Monaco judge’s reaction will give Kelly an idea of just how things are going to go for her for the remainder of the custody battle, I suspect. I fear her refusal to return them may be what ultimately ends this case and not in the way she wanted. This whole fiasco is, ultimately, incredibly sad.
