A source said:
This wasn’t something they ever imagined was possible. They so strictly limit their exposure to these sorts of outside influences – from websites to even the sort of television they watch, if they turn on the TV at all – that they were absolutely baffled by how this could have been possible.”
I have two immediate reactions to this. One, Josh is an adult: they can’t control his exposure to anything anymore. Two, this just goes to show that parents do NOT have absolute control over their children, even if they keep them out of traditional schools by homeschooling and try to limit their exposure to things. There is NO way for parents to completely control their kids: it’s just that simple.
A source said the Duggars are relying on their faith.
[Jim Bob and Michelle are] feeling more devout than ever because they are turning 100 percent to God and prayer and their church community to help them through this. Their faith is in no way rocked by this.”
That makes sense. We know their religious faith is central in their lives; it makes sense that they would use it to cope with this. I’m sure part of what’s going on is they’re wondering how a child they raised is having these problems. A lot of parents would probably have that reaction, to be honest. You’ve done everything you can to raise a decent, honorable person: it can be tough to see your kids challenges and flaws despite all of your efforts.
I wonder if this will influence how Jim Bob and Michelle parent their younger children? I don’t know if their parenting is to blame for Josh’s problems, but I could still see trying to do some things differently if you think it would make a difference.
