Vanessa Hudgens received the Breakthrough Performer at the 2015 Industry Dance Awards earlier this week. It was an especially appropriate setting given that the event supported the Circle of Hope charity, which supports dancers who have been diagnosed with cancer. She got personal while accepting the award, opening up about her father, who is battling stage IV cancer right now.
Her father isn’t the only person close to her who has dealt with the disease, either. Vanessa said:
Last year, my boyfriend, Austin, lost his mom, Lori, to cancer, and my dad has just been recently diagnosed with stage four cancer. Let me tell you, I hate cancer. I hate cancer with every cell of my being.”
I can imagine she does.
A few weeks ago, Vanessa posted a picture with her father on Instagram.
Like most of us, Vanessa always knew cancer was a terrible illness, but her perspective has changed now that she knows people who have been diagnosed with it.
If you would have asked me two years ago what I thought of cancer, I would have said, ‘Man, you know it sucks. It’s a horrible disease,’ but that’s only because I had not been faced with it personally.”
It is tough, as anyone who has known someone with cancer can tell you. Our thoughts are with Vanessa and her family, especially her father.
