Matthew Perry was honored for his work with The Phoenix House rehab center. His only struggle with sobriety was known while he was starring in the hit TV show ‘Friends.’ He checked into rehab twice to deal with addictions to prescription pills and alcohol. The ‘Odd Couple’ star has worked to help other addicts, even converting a Malibu home of his into a sober living house for men.
Matthew had this to say about his award for his work with The Phoenix House:
I’m an award-winning alcoholic, I guess. I shouldn’t be getting an award; Phoenix House should be getting an award.”
Matthew said that one thing his high-profile struggles have done for him is put him in a place to help others.
I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my life and a lot of wonderful accolades, but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me stop drinking?’ I will say, ‘Yes. I know how to do that.’ “
His public struggles shined a light on the disease.
When I was in big trouble, it was so public because I was on a TV show that 30 million people were watching. The fact that I [am] on TV makes people listen a little bit more, so I take advantage of that from time to time.”
Many people would find it that much harder to turn their lives around with all that scrutiny. Good for Matthew for taking a negative and turning it into such a positive!
