Terrence Howard experienced some legal success in his case against his ex-wife, Michelle Ghent, even if he got a bit burned in the process. He was seeking to have his divorce settlement with Michelle overturned on the grounds that she blackmailed and threatened him. She, meanwhile, wants more than the $5800 she currently receives. The judge ruled that Michelle did, indeed, appear to have forced the ‘Empire’ star into the agreement.
The judge wrote in his ruling:
Terrence is a bully, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be bullied. Terrence has an unrelenting pattern of styling himself as the victims of rampant racism and unfair allegations about him.
“A very accomplished actor, Terrence tried to minimize his conduct in past events including an incident on a Continental airline flight. However poorly Terrence may have acted in other settings, he was the only witness to testify concerning the telephone call between Terrence and Michelle.”
The judge found that Michelle “exerted coercive control over Terrence,” which supported Terrence’s claim “that he felt threatened” was “credible.”
Michelle responded to the judge’s ruling in a statement via her attorney:
Despite specifically finding that Terrence Howard was a ‘bully’ who was not credible in multiple respects, the Court granted Mr. Howard’s request to set aside the judgment. We are, of course, disappointed with the Court’s ruling today. Both during and after their marriage, Mr. Howard physically beat and emotionally abused Michelle Ghent, establishing a pattern that continued throughout the marriage resulting in the issuance of multiple domestic violence restraining orders against him.”
Michelle is said to be considering her legal options, including challenging the court’s ruling. This whole thing just seems like a sordid mess. I hope I’m still going to be able to enjoy ‘Empire.’ I now know more about the lead, Terrence, than I ever wanted to.
