‘Downton Abbey’ fans, brace yourselves: the final season is almost upon us! We in the US have a bit longer to wait: the sixth, and final, season of the show will air in the UK starting in September, but we in the US have to wait until early January for it to air on PBS. As all of you who remember your history may know, the time period in which ‘Downton Abbey’ takes place was a time when the British aristocracy underwent a drastic “restructuring” amid the changing social times. It looks like the show doesn’t shy away from that.
The trailer opens with Lord Grantham, played by Hugh Bonneville, telling Mr. Carson, played by Jim Carter:
If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would. But I can’t, Carson. You nor I can hold back time.”
As he says this, we see Mr. Carson removing his nametag from his door. Yeah, get the kleenex out!
Another touching moment occurs between Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, and Anna, played by Joanne Froggatt:
We have had our moments, haven’t we my lady?” Anna asks Mary.
“We certainly have,” Mary replies.
It looks like everyone is packing up and leaving the mansion. This is one thing I admire about British television: they know how to go out on a high note, when the show is still excellent, rather than waiting until the show is merely a shell of its former self. Take a look at the trailer:
