One of the most memorable highlights of the 2015 MTV VMAs was when Kanye West accepted the Vanguard Award. He gave a 10 minute speech, during which he seemed to kind of apologize for when he took to the stage after Taylor Swift won an award, interrupting her acceptance speech to say that Beyonce should have won, and proclaimed his devotion to his art. Kim Kardashian was there to cheer him on, of course ;).
Here are some of the things Kanye said during his acceptance speech. Being a father has clearly affected him; he was inspiring.
We’re not going to teach low self-esteem and hate to our kids. We’re going to teach our kids that they can be something. We’re going to teach our kids that they can stand up for themselves. We’re going to teach our kids to believe in themselves.”
Kanye kinda apologized for the Taylor fiasco.
If I had a daughter at that time, would I have gone on stage and grabbed the mic from someone else’s [hand]? I do fight for artists, but in that fight I was disrespectful to artists.”
Then again, he didn’t quite apologize: this is Kanye, after all ;).
I didn’t know how to say the right thing, the perfect thing. I sat at the Grammys and saw Justin Timberlake and CeeLo lose … I was thinking like, he deserved to win Album of the Year.”
He’s dedicated to art.
I will die for the art, for what I believe in.”
And here’s where Kanye admitted that even he, too, gets nervous.
Y’all might be thinking right now, ‘I wonder, did he smoke something before he came out here?’ The answer is yes; I rolled up a little something. I knocked the edge off.”
Kanye also made quite a claim about his future career aspirations:
And yes, as you probably could have guessed from this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”
Okay, Kanye- LOL. Congratulations on the award!
