‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is still dealing with the fallout of killing off their leading man, Patrick Dempsey’s McDreamy, last season (and if that was a spoiler for you, then I’m sorry, but this happened months ago, which is YEARS in Internet time). Ellen Pompeo and Shonda Rhimes talked about it and why ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ doesn’t need McDreamy to go on.
Ellen, who was as the roundtable discussion with two other of Shonda’s leading ladies, ‘Scandal’ star Kerry Washington and ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ star Viola Davis, said she was offended at the idea that she needed a leading man.
Let’s keep it really real for a second and say this is really difficult for my ego. It’s okay! We all have one!
“It’s like, Annalise Keating carries the show, Olivia Pope carries the show. But somehow, Meredith Grey needs someone. Why can’t I just be the lead of the show the way Annalise and Olivia can? Why can’t I be on that poster by myself?”
She’s got a great point! The show wasn’t just about the romance between Meredith and McDreamy after all, was it?
Shonda said that Ellen’s character, Meredith, got that message back when Sandra Oh was still on the show, when Christina told Meredith that Derek was not “the sun.” Shonda explained:
When Cristina said that, Meredith realized that she had been taking a back seat to allow this man to get what he wanted. In an effort not to become her mother, she had tried too hard to become something less. What I loved about season 11 was her saying, That’s not who I am. It was so interesting for me to discover that audiences, especially women, are so conditioned to believe that there’s a singular fairy tale that nobody stops to think that that might not be the definition of happiness. Meredith knew that already. We got to the point in the season when Meredith said, “I can live without you, but I don’t want to,” which for any woman is a very powerful statement. It means: You compliment me, but you don’t complete me.”
And THIS is what I love about ‘Grey’s Anatomy:’ the show has so many rich, emotional moments for the characters. I’m watching ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ this fall without McDreamy. How about you?
