In July of 2014, Food Network Chef Giada De Laurentiis announced that she and her husband of 11 years, Todd Thompson, were divorcing. The divorce is now finalized, and I think it’s safe to say that if Giada marries again, she will probably get a prenup.
Both Giada and Todd are wealthy: her estimated net worth is $20 million while his is $15 million. Since Giada’s worth more, she was ordered to pay Todd $9K a month in child support, and since they didn’t have a prenup, the 50/50 division of assets applied. She has to pay him half of all the unpaid advances of cookbooks she has a deal to write, which includes: $2.5 million for ‘Giada at Home/Weeknights with Giada,’ $2.3 million for ‘Giada Feel Good Food,’ and $757K for ‘Everyday Pasta/Giada’s Kitchen.’
Todd got their $3.2 million Pacific Palisades home as well as $300K in artwork and furnishings. They’re also dividing various bank accounts that are worth over $2 million. Each gets to keep their own Porsche, and neither one is getting spousal support. They will share custody of their seven-year-old daughter, Jade.
However, Giada is keeping the rights to her brand, which includes an upcoming cookbook as well as her company, Linguine Productions, and GDL Foods, Inc. I understand the division of assets: ultimately, that is how it works in California. The child support, though, is something I have to wonder about: shouldn’t there be a point, if BOTH parents are worth millions of d0llars, that child support should not be considered any more necessary than spousal support?
