This year’s Miss America pageant may not go as planned. Have you seen the promos about Vanessa Williams being scheduled to make an appearance? Well, Vanessa may not appear on the show due to a misunderstanding.
It’s a big deal for Vanessa to appear at the Miss America pageant since she lost her Miss America crown when nude pictures of her were published 31 years ago. She was the first African American woman named Miss America. Vanessa went on to make an amazing comeback as a singer and actress; I’m pretty sure she’s had the most successful entertainment career of any Miss America. Ever. (In all fairness, many don’t go on in entertainment, so they may be extremely successful in more low-key careers.)
Anyway, things reportedly went awry when Vanessa’s people met with the pageant organizers. Apparently, Vanessa was under the impression that the Miss America people would apologize for stripping her of her crown and present her with a new one. However, the Miss America people reportedly were expecting Vanessa to apologize for the pictures, and then she would be presented with a new crown. As of last night, the two sides are still at an impasse, according to TMZ.
This is quite a misunderstanding, isn’t it? Something tells me Vanessa has no intentions of apologizing. Why should she at this point? Miss America needs the publicity of her attendance far more than she needs the publicity of getting involved with the pageant again. Yet I suspect Vanessa did lie about whether or not she ever posed nude: I’m guessing questions like that were asked of pageant contestants early on. The show is this Sunday: we’ll have to see what happens then. Who do you think should apologize for the whole fiasco (Vanessa being stripped of her Miss America crown)? Should anyone have to apologize?
