Remember when the internet was abuzz because Selena Gomez appeared to have gained a few pounds? People started calling her “fat” and telling her she needed to lose weight. The actress-singer spoke out about the experience.
I had a moment and was like, ‘Wait a minute? Is this just comments? Just, like, 12-year-olds mad at me because they hate me?’ And then I Googled, which I should never do, and just started sobbing. I was in Mexico and luckily was surrounded by the most incredible people. I was just so upset. It wasn’t even just saying I’m fat — they’re also saying, ‘She’s a wreck, she’s a mess,’ like, why is that where it goes to? What took it to that place? You don’t even know me. It really upset me for honestly, maybe an hour, because I pulled myself out of it and posted a picture on Instagram where I’m laying down, and my comment back was like, ‘I’m happy with myself.’ Then the next day, that’s what all the headlines ended up becoming. It was like, I’m glad I didn’t let them win. I’m glad I didn’t let them tear me apart and try to ‘ignore it.’ But it was unfair, it was really disgusting. It sucked.”
It is amazing what people will “say” online. They seem to forget that they’re talking about a REAL person, you know, with feelings.
However, Selena responded to it all with an Instagram picture:
She explained why she chose that reaction to USA Today:
I wanted them to be able to be like, ‘Yeah, good. Don’t listen to them and that makes me strong. If you can do that, I feel like I can.’ That, to me, was great. So when I saw the press, I realized, ‘You know what? My social media is going to be way more of a source than any media outlet, ultimately. I could post a nude photo on my Instagram and it’s going to get picked up more than one article.’ I wouldn’t do that, but I could post anything and I know that is my voice and I’m able to control it. There is something that’s a little powerful and great about that.”
The whole thing ended up actually renewing her confidence in her body and herself! That, in turn, influenced her new album ‘Revival.’ Talk about turning a negative into a postive: GO Selena :).
