Clearly gender issues matter a lot to Emma Watson: she launched the HeForShe UN campaign, which is a movement promoting gender equality that calls on both men and women to address the issue of sexism. Now she’s speaking out again about sexism in Hollywood.
Emma pointed out the sexism that she’s personally witnessed in Hollywood.
I have experienced sexism in that I have been directed by male directors 17 times and only twice by women. Of the producers I’ve worked with, 13 have been male and only one has been a woman.”
That is quite an imbalance! She has a point there.
The former ‘Harry Potter’ star acknowledged that sexism exists outside of the entertainment industry, too.
I went out for a work dinner recently [for the UN]. It was seven men…and me.”
However, as you can imagine, most of Emma’s experience has been in Hollywood.
I have been treated so incredibly differently from my male co-stars.”
She also pointed out that women can perpetuate gender inequality too.
Women are just as guilty of discriminating against women. Some of the best feminists I have encountered are men. Some women can be incredibly prejudiced against other women!”
That’s a good point. Sometimes you have people who will “play by the rules,” (even if the rules include sexism) in order to get ahead! That’s what I like about the HeForShe campaign: it calls on everyone to address sexism.
