Remember when Gwyneth Paltrow announced her split from Chris Martin by saying they had decided to engage in an “conscious uncoupling”? People immediately leaped on the unusual term, and, of course, more than a few jokes were told. Now Gwyneth herself is poking fun at the whole fiasco while promoting a new book.
Here’s what was written on Goop:
Have you ever heard the phrase “Conscious Uncoupling”? We definitely broke the internet when GP referenced this specific, gentler way to break up back in 2014. Originally coined and taught by the brilliant marriage and family therapist Katherine Woodward Thomas, the concept of Conscious Uncoupling had quietly inspired and influenced a community of counselors—until, of course, we accidentally blew it up.
Yeah, Gwyneth definitely did blow it up- LOL.
Now there’s a book that talks about how to engage in conscious uncoupling yourself if you’re going through a split.
After the initial WTF?!?, there was a lot of interest in what it actually means, and as GP, her ex, and their children have continued to stay very much a family in spite of the split, there has been a lot of interest in how to actually do it. Last week, Woodward Thomas released Conscious Uncoupling: 5 Steps to Living Happily Even After, a manual that outlines and delves into ways a relationship can be completed and used as an opportunity for true healing and empowerment. It’s a must read for the modern breakup.
Although the term definitely sounds wacky, when you think about it, it’s a great idea. Breakups after a long relationship don’t have to be a scorched earth battle, especially if kids are involved.
