Author Stephenie Meyer did not let the 10th anniversary of ‘Twilight’ go unnoticed! She didn’t just write a new forward for a special edition, as her publisher requested; instead she rewrote the entire book and switched the genders of Edward and Bella.
I wanted to do something fun for the 10th anniversary and the publisher wanted like a foreword and I thought, ‘Well, maybe something more interesting.'”
That meant making re-envisioning Edward as Edythe (a female vampire) and Bella as Beau (a mortal boy). Now that is definitely different!
Stephenie was partially inspired to make this change due to some of the critics who complained about stereotypical gender roles in the ‘Twilight’ series, especially with Bella as the “damsel in distress.”
It’s always bothered me a little bit. Because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be… in distress. We don’t have the powers. I thought, ‘What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does,’ and, you know, it’s about the same.”
While the story didn’t completely change, Stephenie said that more changes occurred as the book progressed.
The further you get in, the more it changes because the personalities get a little bit different. But it starts out very similar and really, it really is the same story because it’s just a love story and it doesn’t matter who’s the boy and who’s the girl, it still works out.”
When Stephenie first decided to switch their genders, she only intended to write a couple of chapters instead of a 442-page anniversary edition. She said this might change how readers view Bella.
I wonder if it will change how people look at Bella a little bit, to see her as him. I do feel like it’s really very much the same thing so I guess my hope is that maybe the younger readers will be reintroduced because a lot of my readers, you know, they’re all 10 years older now and so there’s a whole new generation.”
This is a unique way to breathe some new life into the ‘Twilight’ phenomenon! What are your thoughts on this very special anniversary edition of ‘Twilight’?
