OMG. Remember when Selena Gomez went off the radar for a little bit? There were rumors that she was in rehab, but basically we just didn’t see much of her. It turns out she was undergoing treatment: chemo, to be exact, for lupus.
Selena explained what was going on, and it had nothing to do with any kind of addiction.
I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke. I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
Oh my goodness. I never expected to hear that. It sounds like the chemo was helpful, given that she’s back to making movies and albums. I’m glad she’s doing well!
Selena also talked about channeling her frustrations into her music.
I’m so f—ing nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I’ve been working since I was 7. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story. The hate motivated me.”
I definitely think that’s one of the dangers of getting involved in high profile relationships. Dating Justin Bieber made Selena a household name beyond her tween fans, but it also invites a lot of unwanted scrutiny. She also talked about being empowered by friends like Taylor Swift.
Taylor makes me feel empowered, like I can trust new people. All of those girls are so dope. We ran around taking pictures, changing dresses, dancing — super-cliche girly stuff, but it rocked. The way she cares about women is so adamant. It’s pulling me out of my shell.”
