Bradley Cooper is busy promoting his new movie, ‘Burnt.’ Of course he was asked about Jennifer Lawrence’s article for Lena Dunham’s newsletter Lenny, where she wrote about gender disparities in pay in Hollywood. Despite winning multiple acting awards, including the prestigious Academy Award, she was paid less than Bradley in ‘American Hustle’ although he hasn’t won as many awards as her. So what did Bradley have to say about Jennifer’s article?
Bradley admitted he hadn’t read it yet; it was described to him, however, including Jennifer’s assertion that she had “failed as a negotiator” with Sony because she didn’t want to be seen as unlikeable.
One thing I could say is that’s interesting because if you think that you only deserve a certain amount and that’s not correct, it’s about changing that mindset and sticking up for yourself the way that Sienna did. So that’s a great thing.”
He’s referring to Sienna Miller’s admission.
Sienna shared an experience she had with the wage gap in entertainment:
I walked away from a play that I wanted to do because I was offered less than half of what the other man was offered and it was just the two of us. [I did] what we have to start doing, unfortunately, at the expense of our creative dreams.”
Hopefully Jennifer has also communicated with her agent(s), who likely do the actual negotiations, not to accept less than top dollar.
She is out-earning her ‘Passengers’ co-star, Chris Pratt, which is fitting since she has a larger box office record than he does. It’s the twenty-first century, people: there’s no place for blatant sexism like this!
