Russell Brand is certainly an… interesting person. We’re going to get to learn more about him in this documentary, called ‘Brand: A Second Coming.’ On one hand, he seems to have learned a lot from his own struggles with drugs, yet he also comes across as, well, a raging narcissist. A narcissist with good intentions to bring about a “spiritual revolution.” That’s quite a combo! Hopefully someone warned Katy Perry: he’s not too friendly to his ex-wife, judging from this trailer, at least.
Russell said this about the time in his life when he was married to Katy:
Oh my f—king god. I’m living this life of the very thing I detest. Vapid, vacuous celebrity. Fame and power is bulls—t.”
Then they cut to a clip of Katy saying:
I don’t want to give all of this up.”
OUCH. After a trip to Africa in 2010, Russell came to realize that his relationship with Katy was “not a resolution of anything spiritual” and that “at some point, to be happy, I’m going to have to walk away.”
Perhaps it was the trip to Africa where Russell came to see how people were being exploited in third world countries? At one point he talks about wanting to bring about a “spiritual revolution” where we start treating people better. Yet he seems to be ambivalent about this documentary: he attempted to block it from being shown at SWSX last March.
The director, Ondi Timoner, acknowledged that Russell wasn’t exactly easy to work with and admitted to making some cuts.
There are a couple of things I took out for ethical reasons for Russell.”
In another clip, I believe a woman who is Russell’s mother said he walked into her room and proclaimed himself the “second Jesus” or something like that. Was he high? Russell himself has admitted that watching the documentary was tough for him. Perhaps he had some regrets about some of the things he said and did for the cameras? You have to wonder: what on earth is in this documentary! Check out the trailer for ‘Russell Brand: A Second Coming’ below.
