Paparazzi caught up with Drew Barrymore while she was out and about in New York City. She’s been busy as of late, promoting her new memoir, ‘Wildflower.’ Drew opened up about her complicated relationship with her mother, Jaid, in the book.
Drew said she and her mother have very little contact since she went to court and got legally emancipated at the age of 14. The actress wrote:
I still support her — I must know that she is taken care of or I simply cannot function. I am grateful to this woman for bringing me into this world, and it would crush me to know she was in need anywhere. It is not who I am to harbor any anger for the fact that our life together was so incredibly unorthodox. I want only to say thank you to her, because I love my life and it takes every step to get to where you are, and if you are happy, then God bless the hard times it took you to get there. No life is without them, so what are yours, and what did you do with the lessons?”
Drew didn’t have much of a relationship with her father, John Barrymore, either, although she did help out financially before he died.
The way Drew is handling her relationship with her mother seems to be the healthiest option for her. She’s not letting her mother go destitute, yet, for whatever reason, it sounds like a lot of contact between them doesn’t work out well. If I recall correctly, Jaid didn’t go to Drew’s wedding, did she? That’s a pretty major event for a mother to miss. Well, whatever works best, I guess. Drew is doing so well, whatever she’s doing is working!
