There’s no question that a lot has happened since Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie met on the set of the 2005 movie ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’! They now have six kids (Angelina had already adopted Maddox when she met Brad), have gotten married, and Angelina has undergone some major surgeries with a preventative double mastectomy and her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed. They spoke out about the past decade in an interview.
Angelina decided to undergo the surgeries after losing her mother and maternal grandmother to ovarian cancer as well as a maternal aunt to breast cancer. Testing revealed that she herself carried the gene that predisposes her to the same types of cancers. Angelina said she knew Brad supported her decisions.
I knew through the surgeries that he was on my side and that this wasn’t something where I was gonna feel less of a woman, because my husband wasn’t gonna let that happen.”
I’m sure he was an invaluable support to her during that time!
Angelina discussed her health decisions in two NYT op-ed pieces and got mixed reactions.
You never know what a reaction is—you have to just make the choices you make in life. I made the choices I made because I believed they were right for me.”
Brad discussed how he felt about Angelina’s medical decisions.
Whatever’s got to be done to keep the family together and keep the family together as long as possible is gonna be done. This was her charge, no question. It’s a scary decision. There’s many things that can go wrong and go many different directions.”
I can understand that line of thinking. They have six kids together!
Although in their movie ‘By The Sea’ they play a couple that seems to have hit quite a rough patch in their marriage, Angelina said it was not about their real-life marriage.
I’m counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all, we could never make this film. It’s because we’re actually very, very stable and these aren’t our issues.”
That makes sense: if it was real, it would probably be too difficult to focus on the work (i.e., acting). As she said in another interview, if they had really been going through a rough time like that, they never would have been able to actually shoot the film!
