Kate Winslet may have just starred in the movie ‘Steve Jobs,’ the biopic of a man who helped usher in the technology revolution, which allowed social media to become a part of our regular lives, but that doesn’t mean she’s a fan of social media herself. As a matter of fact, the mother of three has BANNED social media from her house. How in the world do they live- LOL?
Kate has three kids: her daughter Mia is 13, her older son Joe is 11, and her younger son, Bear, is 22 months. You would certainly think Mia and Joe are old enough to be on social media, but Kate says not in her house. She explained:
It has a huge impact on young women’s self-esteem, because all they ever do is design themselves for people to like them. And what comes along with that? Eating disorders. And that makes my blood boil. And is the reason we don’t have any social media in our house.”
I can’t help but think that Mia and Joe are likely exposed to the internet outside of the house, but at least Kate is limiting their time.
She also said that she and husband Ned Rocknroll limit their kids’ time on phones and tablets as well.
Let your kids climb trees. Take the device out of their hand. Play Monopoly! You go to a cafe and grown-ups are at one end of the table and children the other, on devices, not looking up.
“They go into a world and parents let them. … It takes every member of a family to be a member, and there are too many interruptions these days – and devices are a huge interruption.”
However, Kate also said she was not offering advice: she was just sharing how things are done in her family. She said she’s not “another celebrity on a soapbox thinking they’ve got the answers.” Do you feel as strongly about social media as Kate does?
