Taylor Swift’s attorneys are staying busy. In addition to a former Colorado radio personality who’s suing her over her allegation that he groped her (which got him fired), an R&B singer named Jessie Braham has filed suit against Taylor, alleging that she stole some of his lyrics for her hit single ‘Shake It Off.’ He’s asking for $42 million.
Jessie wrote a song in 2013 called ‘Haters Gonna Hate.’ It contained the following lyrics:
Haters gonna hate / players gonna play.”
He claims this is pretty much identical to the lyrics in Taylor’s song, ‘Shake It Off’:
Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play / And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate”
Hmmm… It’ll be interesting to see what a jury makes of that if this case goes to trial.
Her hook is the same hook as mine. If I didn’t write the song ‘Haters Gone Hate,’ there wouldn’t be a song called ‘Shake It Off.'”
Initially, all Jessie wanted was a selfie with Taylor and writing credits for the song. When his requests were refused, he filed this lawsuit. Hopefully Taylor really is able to just ‘Shake It Off.’ (Okay, yeah, I know that was pretty awful…) You can listen to Jessie’s song, ‘Haters Gonna Hate,’ on YouTube. I have to say, sounds nothing like ‘Shake It Off.’
